Guys anyone up for a grand tourismo 3 challenge?

I recall there was a thread on this a while ago, using a gts with only slicks allowed as a mod. Tried it and best lap I could achieve was a 1:27.6, now its is getting me really ticked off because I seem to recall people running low 20's HOW??? Track is Laguna Seca off course.

Anyway if anyone is interested post your best time and lets see who really is the best keyboard racer. Oh and for you zo6 owners out there if you like you can join in on the fun with a zo6 and slicks(only). Now this means slicks only no air box mods/exhaust/tuning/etc(we know some of you have a hard time comprehending exactly what no mods means :D ).

Viper 1:27.6
zo6 1:28.4

I'll have to go try that in a bit. My guess is about 1:27.

I hear GT4 will be online. Get back to me then and we'll see what shakes loose. The last GT3 party we had left a bitter taste...

I remember that....The best I could manage was a 124-125 if I remember correctly....Dont know how people were getting 120-121...just seemed impossible with just slick on....Like Bonkers said..GT4 online will be the real deal...No bs...Hopefully you will be able to tell if someone is using a modded car vs your stock...It would be a shame if they left that out....

Did anyone break down into the 1.21's? I seem to recall it was someone who knocked off a 1.23. Best I could muster was a 1.24.*** I tired to beat it a little while ago but no dice.

Anyone used to play GT1 and GT2 and Playstation 1?

I tried the Viper out on GT3 and it just didn't seem like the game steered and went as good as the old ones did. On the old ones I could hang it out all the way round the corners, dial in a touch of opposite to keep it there... took a lot of practice and if you didn't get it just right you got bit.

GT3 seems a helluvalot more forgiving to me. Kinda like they had to make it so you didn't have to play for 6 months before you could master it. Anyone else find that?

Favourite car was always the GTSR or Concept Car.. most fun - you could oversteer the best in em. *** cars were all just overpowered dodgem cars... Dodges took skill to win

I felt that GT 1 and 2 feel/look/react more arcade-ish to me compared to GT3.

10 laps later... 124.628 I think I could probably get that down to a rteally low 124 or a really high 123 but it would take a while.

I became the master of each GT that came out. Now that I look back on the first two they look stupid. I can remember playing GT1 driving a blue and white GTS thinking "I would love to have one of those cars one day...".

I remember the first "challenge" on the board. I was so bad compared to everyone else (like 10 seconds off maybe). I was within the last 10 in the first challenge. I got disheartened by it, and I dropped out of the competition. It did make me wonder what those guys were doing compared to me. The only games I played on Playstation were the Gran Turismos, so I was a seasoned amateur. Still don't know how they did it. I was completely dumbfounded. Yet I still beat anyone that faced me out of my friends...except once.

The one time I was beat was by my girlfriend. I don't know what happened there, but she put up a good fight, and I didn't slouch at any point. The race went until the very last turn on the speedway. I was extremely amazed, and impressed that I couldn't be angry with myself.

Russ,
I have played GT3 for literally thousands of hours over the past 3 years or however long it has been out. I just bought a GTS, changed the oil(cause that gives you a couple extra hp out of a stock car), purchased supersoft slicks, and went to home-run and settings-laguna seca and ran about fifteen laps to get a 124.628. I do have to swing wide in some of the corners and sometimes two tires go off the road butit is a video game. Just for reference I had the traction control and stability management at their stock settings of 5 and 10. I made a few small mistakes on my best run so I still think a 123 is POSSIBLE but it would take a long time and a little luck. Let me know if there are any other cars you would like to compare. I love this game and luckily I have it here at work all day.

I take all taht stability and tracton control crap off, gets in my way as I'm a "loose" type of driver (tires don't wear out  )

GT3 is as real as it gets, when you compare stock drag times 0-60 etc... it's pretty much dead on when compared to stock numbers.

The real fun is having a game shark and making your own hybrid cars. I have a 650 h.p. GTS with a GTS-R suspension (850KG opposed to 1300ish for a stock car) and GTS-R racing slicks that will bish slap anything and anyone on any course. I could give it more power but that all ends up as tire spin, it is an exceptionally well balanced car and have yet to create anything like it, it's just awesome. I also have the 5ooh.p. GEN3 engine in it. It can knock off sub 10 secon 1/4 mile times no problem.

I've also built a twin turbo drag GTS with slicks that run's 8 second 1/4's

Damn, Craig. When I played it at my g/f's, I had a Black/Silver GTS with 1070(?) HP, done from the game disc. Didn't know Game Shark could give you that kind of stuff.

Russ,
Also, since you asked, I use a few things to help me improve my times in the game. One of those things is I look at my speed as I cross the finish line. That will help you see how well you are carying speed through the last turn. The exit speed out of this turn is very important because there is such a long straight after it. I usually run about 109-111 over the finish line. Also the first turn of the track is a hairpin left. The next turn is a hard right followed by a soft right. You will have to break for the hard rt but shoud stay in the gas all the way through the soft rt. Same thing with the next two turns. Hard left followed by a soft left. Again slow for the hard but stay in the throttle for the soft left all the way to the cork screw. One you get through the cork screw stay in the throttle all the way through the long sweeping left and brake for the right going off of the road into the sand to the left in front of the pit entrance if necessary. THe last turn of the track(that hairpin left) I have found it quickest to resist the temptation of running through the dirt(shortcut) because it just seems to bounce the car into the air and make you lose precious tenths. Good luck and keep trying.

Same here. I have a tweaked stock bodied Viper that does Laguna in 1.07. I could get better but I just got tired of tweaking it..I gave it the Escuda brakes to help out. Not sure if it works better than upgraded brakes..Can your tweaked Viper beat that 1.07 at Laguna? ;) Thats close to F1 territory..

.Just for the hell of it I gave the pt cruser the viper engine and suspension...Did a little downforce tweaks as well...Its now rear wheel driver and nasty on any track....Did a comp coupe with downforce and awd with 16k hp....Its only good for the Test Track but in replays its absolutly sick, when looking from another car, how it just flys by you at 700mph and dissapears.....Game Shark adds some replay value till GT4 comes out...

1.07 I'll have to try, sounds mighty tempting.

Dang it, I'll have to go get my PS2 fixed. Over here the batch I got, they all seemed to die within 6 months (dead laser or something) and I haven't bothered to get it fixed. Been playing GT1 and GT2 forever.. favourite games. GT3 being different, I just sorta rejected it.. maybe I should start playing again. It just seemed so slow in comparison. GT2 got the heartbeat up - screaming into a corner so fast you could barely get the stick down in time to get the brakes on, and the back end around at the same time. GT3 just seemed pedestrian to me and I tossed it.

Graphics are unbelievable though.. wish it had component outputs.. 150 inch screen 1600x1200 resolution

Miles,
I'm pretty sure you can get a component output plug for the PS2. I have a HDTV knoll DLP cinema projector with every input from rca to 15 pin and I have found anything over a 100" screen too big for video games. I find gameplay to be more enjoyable on my Pioneer PDP-5030HD.

Gary,
yeah.. sorry, I meant the 5 component VGA input.. I don't have a 3 component input board for my projector.. got a 3 gun Sony. Might have to run out and buy the board! The projector can squish the picture down to about 80 inch, which is what I usually do with PS1 games.. have you tried the PS2 with 3 component and 480p games? Does it look much better than just using s-video?

Oh,
No I have only used an svideo to play the games with the projector. To be honest with you I get a tad bit of motion sickness with the fast paced games on a big screen(100" and up).
