What is realistic for the miles on the life of the engine? I have seen Viper GTS's on autotrader with over 80k miles and wonder how much of a beating that the engine can take...is 100k + miles something that is very doable..

depends...:eater: The engine is very reliable, if you do not abuse the car.

I know of a 2001 GTS with 118,000... The valve covers have never even been off the car.. All stock, all original. Uses no oil, Runs strong. Other than clutch, brakes, fluids and tires. The car has not been tampered with AT ALL. In fact, I think the original clutch went to about 85k. These are solid cars... But very few people test the mileage on them..

Now, if your talking power add's.. All bets are off. The car could need a rebuild at 30-40k miles. Maybe less. And of course the earlier ones will need headgaskets.. 99-02 are VERY solid cars.

Right the one I am looking at is a '97 with 80k+ miles. I figured things like the clutch and maybe the AC would be a problem. How much does a clutch (ballpark) go for ?

Trying to think what else would be a problem...tires need to replaced, the hood cover looked a mess, but those are somewhat minor

"Hood Cover" What IS that?

Tires from $1049. A full clutch kit with pressure plate can be $299-$599. The A/C parts can be expensive, Evaporator $600, Compressor $500. Used compressor half that. Used Evap worthless. Routine A/C service is the same $ as a Caravan. 1997 needs hoses/belt/wires ~$450.

The service history on this car is critical. Is it available? Keeping a Viper FULL (not low) of good, clean synthetic oil ensures good compression over a long life. I have seen hammered cars need rebuilds at 40-80k miles.... If seller can PROVE long highway trips, the Viper idles along on those.....Any MODS? Generally, guys who add HP mods can 'devalue' the car as a sign of wanting -and using- extra HP.

Were the 2 frame recalls perfomed? Ask your local servicieng-dealer to do an 'open recalls' and vin # check

GOOD LUCK...... Drop-a-dime, Western-time

Sorry meant hood pad. Here is the viper. Person selling it said they are selling for a friend. They note small chip\crack in upper corner of windshield as well as some interior and exterior blemishes. Anyone know this car?

It is stock, one with almost half the miles (44k) with a few mods went for 30k last week, was listed at 32k. So with double the miles I would think it would\should go for at around the same or in the high 20k's

Reserve not met. That looks like a very clean Viper. No mods, no beatings. Depends on how anxious the seller is but I don't see it going for cheap.

Not a bad car at all. Considering that it's a one owner, hopefully you can get access to it's full history. There are cars with less than 10k miles that have transferred owners 4 or 5 or more times. Even though they are "low miles", you can never really get a good history on them. This would be a fun "driver". Will be interesting to see where the price goes.

When I bought my 1st Viper in 1998, it was a 1997 GTS. I put 75,000 mi on it, raced the heck out of it at the dragstrip, changed the oil every 5000 mi and NEVER had any problems with it other then the AC. When I sold it, it looked like a brand new Viper inside and out. I babied it an the street, kept it clean ALWAYS and people though it was a brand new current year Viper everytime I drove it. We traveled from Florida to Vegas a few times and everywhere in between. I loved that car. Sold it and got a great price for it on a new 2006 Viper in 2006. I believe it would have gotten 200,000 mi easily with just taking care of it like I did. Mine was bone stock, with K&NFilter and smooth tubes and dynoed 423 h.p. at the rear 460 lbs, and ran 7.80 every pass at the 1/8th mi. VIPER RULES!!! :drive: :2tu:
