Was out crusin In my 97 GTS, w/ 10lbs ROE charger, Belanger headers, ported cylinder heads. A newer Z06 pulled up a long side of me and started doing some short acceleration bursts so I did a few back. He said he had headers, chipped, intake and some other goodies. Sounded really good. Sure enough the light up ahead turns red we stop and there are no cars ahead of us. He yells over "this looks like trouble" I nod and start keeping a close watch on the light. I figure I'm going to come out easy and gradually get on the gas because its cold out and the Kumhos spin like crazy when its cold. Green light and we both leave evenly. He starts pulling me and has me by about a fender. I panic and floor it and annihilate the back tires. So now I'm thinking first gear is wasted might as well shift into second and see what happens, maybe the tires will hook up then. Nope. that didn't happen. More tire spin and a little wheel hop. But guess what, he still only has me by a fender. He's having trouble hooking up also. I pedal the car for an instant and get back into it only to produce more tire spin. So now I'm thinking get the ******** thing into third gear, surely it won't spin then and if I can stop spinning maybe I'll have a chance to get by him. I short shift into third still a fender behind and because my RPMs are down and I'm out of the power band the tires don't spin, but now I don't have the power to drive by. For what seemed like an eternity we stay dead even, the Vette still holding a fender length advantage. As my RPMs begin to climb I can feel the big V-10 starting to come alive and I start gaining slowly, inches at first, then a foot, then another, now we're even. I'm at 5,000 RPM's and pushing down so hard with my right foot I think I sprained my ankle. As the tach leaps from 5000 to 6000 RPM's so does the Viper, by about a car length ahead of the Z06. OK, that's enough, I'm done. I start braking hard and so does he. We slow down to normal speed and he looks over, gives me the nod and a thumbs up, which I return, and then he turns off. God I love this car!

Seems like you should have had that one pretty easy. Are you running W/M inj. on that 10lb. pulley?

Before I bought my Viper....A couple of years ago...My friend and I were cruising in his Z06 and just amazed at the car....The power...The Noise...and we were talking how it was the King of the Streets and along comes beside us this Blue and White Gts...96 or 97
We hammer it and this GTS was neck and neck with us for two runs....Let me tell you the ride home was quiet...and I kept trying to reassure me friend...We jad two guys in our car...He only had one...Etc....But it bugged the Hec out of him I could tell...It pit a damper on the ride home...LOL
Well....I bought a Viper after that...LOL
Just because I Loved the Look of it first off...But its no slouch stock...and it all depends on the Driver....

But definitely you would have annihilated that Z06...Good Job Buddy

I love eating Vettes at the road course where it takes skill and not just money for bolt ons and a heavy foot for a short distance thrill with all the excuses to follow.

This is it exactly! :)

Last season I had victory over a ZR1 at High Plains Raceway.
Both of us on Hoosiers, and the ZR1 is just a faster car wide open on the straights. Undeniable. 638 HP supercharged monster vs. my near stock gen III. Plain and simple, I have to out drive them in the corners to keep up.
Managed to catch him mid session, after riding his tail a couple laps,.....I got the reluctant point-by.
(it may have been with his middle finger too) -One of my track buddies with a Lotus points me by like that every time.

The rest of the session I spent widening the gap between us.
That was one of my high points last season, to pull ground on a faster car with driver skill. Gave me self validation of improvement as a driver.
So much more satisfying than side by side on a highway. -In that setting the ZR1 will embarrass a gen III Viper.
......besides, the nice thing about racetracks is...........no cops.

Me too ^^. But he almost broke his ankle because he was pushing the pedal down so hard. I did that too when I first bought my Viper...and almost killed myself.

Had a run in with a Subaru WRX STi. T'was on the highway...I-35W East. Out pulled him easy from 60-120. Must of had a few mods because I could hear the waste gates blowing pretty loud. The driver looked like he was about 16. Punk....

Yeah, I dislike those things too. That seems to be one of the younger crowd cars these days.

Funny how they try to hang with something like a Viper.
.........same thing has happened to me a few times.

Always some kid driving.

One of the first mods (if you want to call it that) I did to my Viper was throwing some drag radials 345/35/18 on the rear. Dead hook every gear.

With the SC and 10lb Roe you should have left him standing still with his jaw to the ground. Pull up easy next time ( Roll into first), double clutch it into second and hammer it at that point in third and look in your rear view mirror for the little guy racing you.

Either that or you need new tires.

Had a run in with one when my viper was nearly stock. He had a tune and a filter, my car tune filter, exhaust. On the dyno my car made 17 hp than his. From a second gear roll the viper would pull out in second gear a full car length. Shift to third I would get another 1/2 car length. Then the pull would stop and I would watch the corvette making its move. I would stay ahead until I shifted into 4th gear. As I was making the gear change into 4th, the corvette got slightly ahead. After that the corvette started moving ahead. The corvette won by 11/2 to 2 car lengths on the top end. The race ended at about 160 mph. This of course happened just south of the border.

I recently upgraded to twin turbos and another guy in a z06 wants to race. This time I'm in third gear and he's in second. The reason I'm in third because its difficult to get traction and this time I know I have covered anyway. I give him the initial hit so he pulls out a quarter car length. Then the viper starts to real him in and by the top of third gear i'm 2 1/2 car lengths ahead. I shift in to 4th gear and proceed to put several bus lengths on him. I decide to let off after that. The corvette guy wants to run again and again. The kid in his car just doesn't get it. Finally we both start in second gear and although the traction is very limited and I'm in and out of the throttle so to speak his car gets left behind almost immediately. To show the kid he lost I accelerated ahead of him changed lanes so he was directly behind me 20 car lengths and then turned on the hazards.

I've got a lot of respect for the corvette because I almost bought one instead of my viper. I'm thinking about adding one to the stable maybe an 08 or newer z06 for a daily driver. I like the new vette but I don't think 455 hp (crank shaft)is enough.

I always seem to get a smile and a "what's up" wave from Vettes. Now those damn new camaros are a whole different story: I swear every last one has tried me when they see me cruising on the freeway.

So, you got the Camaro's all up in your ass when you go cruising. I get the Mustangs. Every time I go out there is always ONE. I love it.

This is why I went with a Paxton tuner kit, the gen 2 cars are beasts in the 1st few gears, and the Paxton gets stronger as you pick up speed.

There is just something about ZR1 drivers..... it IS a great car but for some reason the folks who buy them seem to think they are invincible or something.

I was at Barber Motorsports Park last year in a session with the guy who heads the Rezoom chapter and drives a ZR1. I could catch him pretty easily but he was a straightaway hero and wouldn't give the point, he'd always come out of T14 and floor it which for most pursuers was enough. Several laps of crawling up his butt AND staying on his tail through the straights I had enough......when we entered the straight on the 3rd lap I hammered it, pulled even with him, waved and then backed off to get right behind him. He got the message and pointed me by in the carousel.

I think they somehow believe what nobody should ever believe.....that no car out there can out dragrace you!

You got to admit, the ZR1 sounds like a beast. I wish the Viper had a 7200 rpm redline...
