Half-Shaft Question?

I'm in the process of swapping diffs on my car. I completely removed both half-shafts to make accessing the tight rear frame area easier. When I was removing them it was difficult to compress them. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn't they expand and contract easily or are they solid? The rubber boot in the center suggests there is a joint there.

If I need to replace them now is definitely the time.

Thanks for your help.

I had my stock shafts replaced with Unitrax last fall. While I didn't do the work, I certainly handled both sets. I remember them both being rather rigid.

received my half shafts yesterday and man are they nice. they do, in fact, extend and retract easily with little effort. I'm sure they will make a huge difference in the way the car behaves...
