I just bought my second viper, a 97 red GTS. Beautiful car, and mostly stock except for HRE 546s, shifter and an unknown airbox mod.

The engine-side of the airbox has been cut out, and another airbox backside has been riveted and sealed to it. The outlet appears to be 3" now. There are smooth tubes with a built in reducer to take the 3" tube down to the stock throttle bodies. The front section of the airbox remains stock (the rain diverter remains).

Very slick, and I want to do this to my '95. Anybody know who does these things, and how much power is it worth over just the smooth tubes?

It is common to put two air scoops such as you would use for brake cooling lines at the rear of the airbox (and feed these directly to the throttle body tubes)to increase the airflow through the box/filter, is this what you are describing? I recall claims of 5-7hp bandied about a couple of years ago on this with the gen II cars. I never saw a dyno chart on it. The Hennessey carbon fiber airbox uses the same basic shape as what we jerryrigged if that offers a point of comparison. By using the scoops rather than the stock setup a much greater area of the filter is available for airflow, the flat surface of the stock box is restrictive.

That may be what was done. Pretty much the whole rear part of the stock airbox was cut out and replaced, fairly rectangular.
