Having trouble deciding between 19\'s or 18\'s?

As some of you know - I recieve my black '94 mid Sept. The first change will be wheels/tires. I am having a tough time deciding between 19" or 18" wheels. I really like the 6-spoke HRE's in 19", but haven't seen them on an RT/10. Anyone have there - I think they are 543's? Do I def. have to have the car lowered with 19's? Besides the obvious price factor, anyone have any thoughts?

Dave.

For what its worth 19" wheels are heavier, have a very poor selection of tires, and seem to hurt cars cornering ability. But they do look good.

The HREs you're referring to are 546s. Personal preference on size. I'd stay with 18s for performance reasons.

I agree. The 19's look pretty cool, but tire selection is limited. 18's with Eibachs look nice IMO (though I'm clearly biased)

so im guessing 20's would be out of the picture? out of curiosity, does any one know the weight difference between the 18 and 19 inch or HREs per individual wheel?

Depends on the rim....You have some 19" rims that weight less than your standard 18" rim hell even some 17"ers.....I know that in the Import market Volk racing makes some very light 18-19 inch rims. Had a friend with a Supra that bought 19" Racing Hart rims that were lighter than his old 18"rims..Maybe Fiske, Forgeline etc may have for the domestic market...

You need to take into account the difference in tire weight as well. A 19" tire with the same outer diameter will weigh less than an 18". It is the combined weight of the wheel and tire that is important.

Good points made!
I would think that Forgeline and CCW wheels would be lighter as they are made by Companies with racing in mind. Not sure if I am right, but makes sense to me!
Also, those SSR wheels are supposed to be very light. And in case it hasn't been put on this board yet, they are going ahead with the production of another style 19' for Vipers besides the grey 6 spokes that was initially mentioned. I will try to get a picture of the ones they are going to make here in the near future.

The MD/VA VCA had an event this spring at a major tire/wheel distributor, the engineers were there from Hunter who make the balancing alignment machines. With a 97 GTS on the rack they made some incredible observations about both lowering the car and about going up in tire size. Bottom line, don't go up more than one size. 17 to 18 or 18 to 19 depending on year. Just don't lower the car period, it has to do with the change in geometry as the suspension moves. There were a lot of us there thinking of lowering and going up two sizes. I would be surprised if anyone did after seeing this demo, very enlightening.

If and when I do go from 17' to 19' wheels, couldn't I just make a adjustment in my suspension to get the same performance of better than before?

I think vipermed has a set of freshly chromed 546 18s for sale with rubber at a reasonably price, check the supplier special page
