Nope, I don't think there is a real fix. My guess is that the only way to really get around the CE problem is to re-program the computer to have a longer time before it checks the temperature of the O2 sensor. Anyone doing this?

I'm having a lot of mods done to my Viper right now at TNT Motorsports and this issue did come up. I was told that this was only a problem w/ the newer Vipers. (My 97' GTS never had that problem!!) TNT has a product they use (can't remember what it's called) that actually tricks the computer or something. They say that there's no guarantee that the light won't come on but the part they sell drastically reduces the chance.

OK here's the deal. I have a 99 with Belanger Headers and no cats. I endured a c/e light for some time before getting a handle on it. There were two sources.

First, if the cats are removed the rear O2 sensors will trigger a c/e light. This was corrected in my car through the use of electronic Snakeboxes sold by Apex Motorsports ($229). Essentially, the boxes replace the rear O2 sensors and send a signal to the ECU that replicates normal (with cats) operation. Absolutely works!

Secondly, the front O2 sensors on Belanger headers were (are) located in the collector. At this location the O2 sensors may not be subjected to sufficient exhaust heat thus triggering a c/e light. Several owners have relocated the sensors upstream into one of the primary tubes. I believed that I too would need to make this modification since the corresponding trouble code had been set. As luck would have it, the left O2 sensor actually failed and once replaced the light went out permanently (as in 3,000 miles ago). Really good news since I was less than thrilled with the primary tube relocation concept given the potential for uneven primary tube pressure.

Problems differ somewhat by model year so look for posts that specifically reference an 01 car. By the way, this is a real bang for the buck modification. I can pull away from a stock Viper pretty convincingly with just headers and a few other tweaks (Moto Mike, VIPE ME you out there?).

Good luck .....

I have been told by several sources that the newer cars don't get
much improvement from headers any way. 10-15 HP and having to pay
extra for a "maybe" fix isn't worth it to me for now.

Sean - Check the front O2 sensors for clearance under the heat shields. The wires could rub bare and short out, thereby triggering a c/e light. Did you determine the fault code?

I reiterate, I have not had a c/e light in at least 3,000 miles and the car is running really strong. Sorry to hear you have not had similar fortune.

Happy Holidays .....

PS - I should add that I am yet to install high flow cats which are intended to reduce noise and exhaust odor.

PartsRack has more than several 2001 happy campers w/ headers and hi flow cats and cat-backs, with NO LITES AT ALL. EVER. One is 2002. NONE chose catless. "Formula for failure" in my opinion, without hanging other electrical band-aid doo-dads (that doo work, however.......)

In truth, none have 4000-5000 mile histories yet, but that should NOT be a factor. The lite has NOT come on.

Beginning in march 2001, we R+Dd O-2 placements w/ belanger, and we have the SWEET SPOT. Now, all our Belanger headers have DUAL O-2 bungs (as do our CDI-ARCHERS) for fittment in 96-99 or 00-02. In this way, if you later decide to sell or trade headers, they are ready to go...just plug the unused O-2 ****.
