Most owners belive the Viper is very reliable. Do a search and you will find many posts regarding "daily driver" Vipers. You will not regret purchasing this car.

Well Mike, you would not be dissappointed with a Viper. It would exceed all of your expectations and you would wear out before the car.

Please skip if you are not interested in practicality However, practically speaking, this (IMO) is not a grocery getter. I would not want to use it as a car I depended on for shopping and etc just because I wouldn't want to take a chance with it being hit by doors and buggies.

But if you have another car it is a perfect addition to any garage. Don't get me wrong it is comfortable and reliable, but I don't think it is practical. To me there is a difference.

Obviously insurance depends on record and age, but I was surprised how resonable it was. Look at several years of Gen II's and I bet you could swing a Viper and a 2nd car to do all the dirty work. Good luck.

I once got 10 bags of groceries in my Viper - 6 in the back hatch area & 4 in the passenger seat compartment to prove to my wife that my Viper is not a toy.

However, parking it and leaving it unattended is not the thing to do - I taught a few classes at the end of the day at the high school and my daughter saw a boy run over to it and started kissing it between 6th & 7th periods. I don't drive it to high school when I teach classes there anymore.

Certain parts of Ohio (Athens, home of Ohio University) have streets with too much variation in road height - like where my daughter plans to go to college & I wouldn't be able to drive it in town or even park it or pull in to a gas station without scaping the front of it.

On the other hand, I could not imagine life without my Viper.

Welcome Michael!!!
I agree with the others, but you may have noticed no one addressed the gas issue.
It would be like asking a NASCAR driver if they measure gas mileage during a race!!!
Racelike performance does not equal good gas mileage especially if you say you like to jump on the accelerator.
Average driving you can expect between 11 and 20 mpg.
If you jump on it...aaaahhhhhhhh.
Just read any evaluation on the car and see how many times the phrase "brutal acceleration" is
mentioned
I love my Viper and so will you if you get one...a work of art...
Like Nike says "Just Do It"
Good luck!

I got 17.3 MPG city/highway/full throttle in my Roe Supercharged Viper, so gas mileage is not an issue with me. Just affording gas is an issue, however.

Dear Michael:

Well, where to start? The Viper as a daily driver. To tell you the truth it is all a matter of opinion. You will find that some people say that it is a good daily driver and some that say it is not a good daily driver. I just purchased a new RT/10 and to tell you the truth that will be my daily driver unless the weather gets really bad. Snow is one of those times since I live in New Jersey. I have an SL500 Sport and looking at the Viper, I knew that I was going to be giving up quite a few things to get this car. The Viper does not have as many things as the Mercedes has. A few things off of the top of my head that you will be giving up are:

Garage Door Opener

Multi-Position Seats

Electronic Seats

Smooth Mercedes Like Ride/Some Comfort

TRUNK SPACE

Luxury Items Inside The Car

Those are the only ones that I can think of now but I can tell you that there are a few more.

As for price wise, I would be very surprised if you go to a dealer and get a low mileage 2000 for under $50,000. Now in this day and age dealers are only that really rip you off. At a dealer with about $50,000 you are looking at a 1998 or 1999 if lucky. The best place to get a deal would be eBay. I know that a lot of people are skeptical about buying a car on eBay and if you are one of these I would suggest trying to find on eBay that is being sold by a dealer. Anytime a dealer is on eBay they are in a tight situation to sell the car and you will have much better odds purchasing through there. That is how I got my new RT/10. I saved about $15,000 and mine was brand new with an exhaust system, radar system, and tinted windows. Since I have been a member on eBay that is how I rather buy my vehicles.

Wow, I am writing quite a bit. I promise you that I am almost done.

Mileage on this car is a killer. If you start putting a lot of miles on it the price will begin to fall for resale value but as one member stated, "If you can afford the car you can afford the depreciation." The mileage issue has not stopped me because I plan to be putting about 15,000+ miles a year. I know a few people that drive their Vipers like this and it is absolutely fine because the warranty is amazing. Where else will you find a 7 year 70,000 powertrain warranty? My Mercedes only had that 4 year 45,000 mile warranty and it is just about up meaning I have to get rid of the car. You know what it cost to repair that thing after the warranty is up? It is not worth it.

The gas issue is a bit different that the Mercedes. This car gets I'd say about 14 mpg for everyday driving. If you are doing lots of highway driving you will be looking at somewhere around 20. Chrysler says it is a 11 city and 21 highway. If you stay in the low gears then of course you will get at the gas station everyday.

Lastly insurance. That is a very interesting topic. To tell you a rate would be almost impossible because I do not know your age category and driving record. I know one person paying only $1000 a year and he is 36 with no recent tickets. I also know that young people are paying quite a bit, up to $10,000 a year. I am pretty young but I lucked out because of my insurance company.

I hope that I got to answer all your questions. If you have anymore please feel free to let me know.

Have a good weekend

My 0.02 is to agree with the posts that suggest getting a nice used Viper, and a grocery getter car also...Say the combo
I am partial to is a nice 95 E320 (cheap now due to being the older body style) and an RT/10. RT vs GTS might depend
on where you live, and what you want to do with it...

Turning radius and Visibility are poor in the Viper...well, turning radius with those HUGE tires up front is worse than
poor...Another annoyance is how much trouble non-Viper-holics have getting in and out...They will be beating up
your passenger side...arghhhhhh...As mentioned, you will be so in love with the car that leaving it at a grocery store
parking lot is just not an option...Also, for me in my RT, I drive sans windows always in the summer, so talking on
a cell phone is out (my 96 does not have electric side windows)...Even with the side windows in place, and the Corsa
cat back, cell phone conversation is challenging...Doable, but fergetabout having a work related conference call as
an example...And if you have any unusually steep driveways in your daily routine, that could be a challenge...And
you won't ever want to leave the car outside uncovered...sheeeeeeeeesh, parish the thought...I mean ever...And
fergetabout valet parking at a restaurant/bar...just fergetaboutit...

How about $45K for a great Viper, and $12-14K for a nice 94-95 E320!

The other intangible is, have you driven a Viper? I just HAD to have one, before I ever drove one...My mind was
made up, so I would have bought one no matter how loud/gas guzzling/hard to get in and out of/poor turning radius,
poor stock stereo/interior noise/no dead pedal/... it might be... I LOVE IT...period.

I'm with Tomer and the others. My Viper is my toy.

I had a freind, while I was in the Navy, who rode his motorcycle to work EVERY day. On the weekends I would invite him out for rides...I had a ZX-7 at the time. He never came because he rode that bike every day, it was no longer a toy.

Not that this could happen with a Viper...but it is a possibility.

I recently got rid of my 02 Lightning in an effort to be practical. I got a leftover 02 Neon R/T (don't laugh...I get about 27MPG in town and can drive for 2 weeks on 12 bucks :) ).

Anyway...with $50K you can find a nice older Viper and have a toy for the weekends, and get a decent daily driver.

All the comments are pretty accurate. You CAN daily drive a VIper, and many do, it all depends on how YOU are about cars and stuff. I drive mine to work on Fridays because the parking lot is usually about half as full...but other days I would be to stressed. That is just how I am.

I guess what I am trying to say is evaluate ALL your options. You can spend maybe $40K on a nice used Viper in good shape...and have $10K to put down on a decent daily driver. I like the fact, now, that I have a Viper AND a daily driver (that has a full warranty and I just get in and drive it), all for one small car payment. But that, again, is just the way I am.

I see a guy where I work who splurged and bought a new 350Z. He parks it near the fence by the body shop next door (big mistake), and it looks as if it has turned into the average daily driver. I like the fact that BOTH our cars are daily drivers....I just spent a ton less. :)

Sorry, not a lot of help...and it is definitely a tough decision (NOT whether to buy a Viper or not...just how to do it and stay 100% happy).

Lastly....definitely do a search on "daily driver" and the like. There is so much info out there, especially from people who do daily drive.

Now...if I could go back to being a house-husband and kept man, I could probably get by with just the Viper. :)

Paper or plastic.(J/K).

I bought my car in the Bay area and did not have anything else for 4 months. It was not a good situation for me and I had to go buy another vehicle.
I had to remove the spare tire in my RT just to get the big box of Captain Crunch in there.

Everytime someone asks this question, and it happens a lot, I think of the old saying, "If you have to ask..."

Guys that say go ahead, are guys who had long ago made up their mind to drive the car everyday, no matter what. So, they can't be trusted (I was one of them, so I know!)

Based on where you're coming from (luxury car) and what you want it to do (suitable for all driving conditions) and what you have to spend ($50,000), a Corvette is the car for you.

The Viper is an extremely visceral experience. That's its whole appeal, yet that is also what makes it less than ideal as a daily driver.

But, when the weather's right, and the road is clear, WOW, what a second car!

As someone who did it for a couple of years, I'd have to recommend against it.

The Viper has a few problems with being a daily driver (these may or may not be issues to YOU)

1) The biggest one by FAR is that this car tracks the road like crazy. On anything less than perfect roads, you will have to hold the wheel tight because the car has a mind of it's own. When I was in Vegas, it was a whole different car. In New England where we have potholes, crowned roads, cracks everywhere in the steets, and rocks and grit all over, the Viper ***** driving daily.

2) The car guzzles gas - especially in stop-go traffic. If i commuted in it, I'd get MAYBE 160 miles to a tank. Mostly highway would net me 200 miles maybe. Bear in mind it was a good $30 a tank of premium. It got old fast. Insurance and tires also cost a lot.

3) You won't want to leave the car anywhere. If you don't have private, secure parking - you will never feel safe leaving it.

4) It's small inside and low. If you need to run to the store, better hope you're not buying much. If you go to anywhere you've never been before, you will find any number of places to scrape up the front going over dips and such.

5) You will not enjoy stop and go driving in this car. Also, I hope you don't talk on your cell phone while driving - if you do you won't do it in a Viper... too loud.

6) If you don't plan on owning for the long haul, mileage is going to ding you on value. If you buy an '00 now with 5k for $50k, and put 48k on it over the next 4 years, it will be worth MUCH less. Compare value of a 99 now with 60k miles to one with 10k miles.

Having said that... it's the most fun car I have ever owned. I guess the best way to sum it up would be... considering the high price of each mile in this car (given the factors above), wouldn't you rather save the mileage for when you can genuinely enjoy it - like a weekend romp rather than wasting it in your shirt and tie wading through rush hour traffic on the way to the office, WISHING you were on a backroad on a sunday morning? That's my take anyway.

Your insurance on the Viper will be considerably less $$$ if you've also got a ****** for your daily driver. That way your ****** will be your primary vehicle and the Viper "for recreational driving."

Michael,
Where do you live? If you reside in a place that has any and I must underline any snow or cold weather, don't consider it at all as a daily driver. Even the best Viper driver would loose this car in a corner when there is a hint of ice or wet and cold pavement. It is very touchy on any surface like that. Absolutely a torque monster, and very hard to control on slick surfaces. It is no where near the most comfortable car on the road, that is not why most of us have purchased this car. It is very low to the ground, and it just is not meant as a daily driver unless you live in southern Cal, Florida, or some place like that. Even Florida might present a problem when there is a threat of frost.
Consider a "******" like Ron Hickey says above as a daily driver, and use the Viper for "recreational driving" only. You won't be sorry if you do it that way.

I love the Viper to an insane degree but would not have one as a primary car or a daily driver. I'mm too paranoid of what "could" happen to it plus getting in and out all day long would be a pain in the @ss, driving in cities and traffic is a pain due to all the attention the car gets. In traffic they lug if you are lightly on the throttle and buck all over the place. The tires track the road un any less than perfect surface. The car is ideal for blasts to let off some steam but will probably frustrate you more in everyday driving than it's worth.

In all seriousness I would get a corvette for daily driving work.

I use my Viper as my primary vehicle (have a Chevy Pickup also) and have no problems. The only concern as a daily driver would be safe parking and snow. Mine (lumpy cam 97) drives fine in rush hour traffic and runs smoother, has a lighter clutch and runs cooler than the 69 Mustang I learned to drive on. It works great for grocery trips as it holds about 10 bags in the rear. The only places I won't drive it to is where there is unsafe parking (the movies) or Home Depo runs of course. I think you will find it a far more satisfying car than the SLK. Quality is different but the last rating I saw rated the SLK below the Plymouth breeze and the Cadillac DeVille!

I daily drive my viper, putting ~20k miles a year on it. Durability/reliability will vary from car to car - many have not driven there's enough to experience problems. I have ~40k miles on it, and have had the following problems fixed under the extended warranty: tranny replaced, each window mechanism replaced or repaired, hard top latches replaced, oil gaskets replaced, as well as a few other things, all of which would have cost $10-12k to fix if it were out of my pocket. There are the other expenses to deal with for a daily driver as well - gas (I spend a couple hundred a month), tires (at 20k miles, that's at least a new set of rears, costing $400-$700 for a set of rears, depending on size and market prices), oil change ($50 just for the oil and filter alone, every 3k miles), insurance (varies by user), etc. It is not a cheap car to use as a daily driver, so be sure to factor in all the costs if that is your plan.

Hey Mike,

Tell your neighbour he will cause more problems not driving the car than driving it, I hope that's what he meant. Gen 1 cars are notorious for leaking head gaskets which is compounded further by non-use.

Work it out, the savings in insurance with using a daily driver all the time, and sports car coverage for occasional use (under 10K around here) on the Viper pays the lease on my daily driver, a ***** Tiburon I beat the tar out of.

It would cost me more to drive my Viper year round, which is not an option with the weather here regardless, thinking I need to move to Florida pre-retirement.

Good luck, get a solid daily driver and a Viper, and save the Viper for some fun on the road that it was designed for, not stop and go, pick up some Bisque semi-gloss to paint the bathroom with the girlfriend crap, etc. Not to say it can't be done, I've grocery shopped several times, drive thrus, you name it, but it's once in a while, always gets a laugh, and I have been lucky so far, no damage! I seem to spend alot of time at our city dump owning rental properties, yet to bring my GTS to the dump maybe this year, I'll get pics for sure.....

Keep us posted on your progress.
