HELMET intercom HEAD SET !! NEED RECOMMENDATIONS !!

Hey Folks,

I am looking into getting a helmet head set for road course racing, so I can talk to my passengers, or when I am helping someone out, give them instructions on track. What are some of the brands/models and prices, for ones you guys have tried out and REALLY like !!

The viper days folks use the chatterbox units.

I have tried and with limited success found them all but unusable. I have tried to use them in two silver state challenges and both times as I approach my terminal velocity >150mph I find myself unable to communicate with my navigator and having to resort to hand signals. Sometimes those hand signals become interesting. <grin>

On a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being best, I personally rate them a 2 at best.

I may have had some seriously bad luck with the ones I bought but at this point I don't care to try my luck again, I'll take my money to Vegas.

I'm sure the chatterboxes have a loyal following, just NOT ME. If you chose to go that route I have two HJC-50 units and a few of the internal helmet headsets I'd part with.

Wow, you pay the extra $150 and I'm in !!

Those are great, but I dont need wireless, wired ones are much cheaper, and probably work better. If one of us gets thrown from the car, I have a lot more to worry about then a lost head set (which I think is why they are wireless, incease someone falls off, or if there is a lot of getting on and off the snow mobile/bike.

I'll chime in for the Chatterbox's (Brand)

We bought 4 sets (small group buy) of chatterbox's (wireless) for when we rode (motorcycles) Paid over $300 per set (including passenger and they were Hard wired)

They SUCKED!

They didn't have near the range as advertised and way too much interference even after changing the plugs (resistor type) using Batteries instead of the 12v power supply they included (with filters). Suppose to be able to plug in a Radio/CD into the headset and they were voice activated. That didn't work very well either. Wind noise would always affect it. Everyone in our group had pretty much the same results.

If you use Chatterbox

You would be better off with two cans and a piece of string!

hahaha.. I guess chatter box, is from all the "chatter" you hear over the radio when no one is talking, and its picking up all that interference !!

Jon - I have a headset installed in my roadrace helmet. It's the type where the mic is mounted on the helmet, but then you put on earplugs for the hearing. Plug earplugs into mic, and then the helmet to any type of radio (several adapters... I used the standard Motorolas). May be overkill for your needs, as my setup was made to talk to pit crews. You can also talk to other drivers on track

lol, unless i am going to talk $hit, I dont need to talk to other drivers. Just my immediate passanger. I just want something that works, works well, and lets me talk to the person next to me, PREFERABLY hard wire, as you cant beat the signal quality of DIRECT CONNECTION.

They have a "********" icon ? Cuz thats what I would use for that one Linh. So you know without a doubt, without that information, you would have had a collison. Wow must be nice to know the future with complete centainty. Ok, I get the point, I agree its a nice to have, but without someone to radio that back to me, its unlikely to have any value, also they have to be in front of me (an event thats not likely for any of my peers :-D, unless I am coming around to pass them again) ;-)

Just messing with you. I am not ********* racer.... YET... so right now, I just want an inexpensive head set. Thanks for the feedback thus far !!

Save your money get a real racing system. "Racing Communications" is what I use in my boat and I believe in the race team I drive for. All I can say is on this you get what you pay.Pay the extra for a good set up there is nothing like a good 2way system.

I, and a bunch of fellow instructors, used to use the Nady. They broke all the time. It was a very weak design and couldn't take much of a beating. We all recently switched to the Chatterbox (wired versions) and are very happy. I have a closed face helmet, and mounted earpieces inside the helmet and put the mic inside the helmet in front of my mouth. The small radio box is mounted on the side of the helmet. When I get into student's cars, I hand them the student earpiece/microphone combo that is wired to my helmet. It works fantastic. We never have to yell and can understand each other very well. Before I had it, I would lose my voice by the end of the first day because of all of the yelling. The Chatterbox is especially handy in the Viper when I take the students for a ride, as I can comfortably talk to them while I'm driving in a normal voice and we are not overcome with the sound of the engine. The Chatterbox has never failed me, and about 25 of my friends have them. I'd recommend the wired version, but I don't have any experience with the wireless version that people use for motorcycles.

I've used both Chatterbox and Collett on my motorcycles. I never use wireless since they ****. The wired Chatterbox *****. They have better marketing but the product never worked as advertized. The Collett is very reliable.

I have never had any problems communicating with my instructors at the Viper Days events with the Chatterbox. I cna hear every scream and yell they say! Works surprisingly well, just talk normal, do not yell, as they always say to me!!

I can understand why you'd want a hardired set as opposed to radio, however the weak link with these (at least with the chatterbox units) is the pin plug...always shaky and everyone who's used one knows exactly what I am talking about. You are spending as much time jiggling the plug-in-jack as you are shifting. If you are going this way, I strongly recommend you solder this in permanently.

PS. Anyone know how to get us a bigger "signature box" (mine is currently maxed out), everyone keeps telling me to brag about my 2:16 lap time on oem pilot sports this past weekend. I told them all no.. but I think they are right, it needs to be in my signature. I mean after all, my 11.50's on oem street tires is there too...
