What's a dead pedal?

I honestly didn't know what those were. And after resting my foot on the floor on both my Vipers and my pickup truck, I still don't know what I'm missing.

Sometimes I think post like these are from Corvette owners just trying to start some grief.

A dead pedal is usually made of metal, and bolted directly to the chassis. This allows the racer a direct tactile link to the road surface, and gives invaluable feedback as to what the car is doing. Sounds like a small item, but a proper dead pedal really ties you to the car, and it's performance capability.
Just that thin piece of carpet and padding isolate you from what your car is doing.
As far as comfort, you will be just fine resting your foot under the clutch.
The adjustable pedal's on current model Vipers allow almost everyone to find a comfortable position.
Enjoy your new VIPER!

Well I am finally ready to by a Viper YEAH!!! A dream come true! I have one question.... I was in Daytona Beach over the Christmas Holiday and went decided to go sit in a new Viper. Well being 6'1" it was a tight squeeze but it was comfortable. My question is why is there no dead petal for my foot?? The way I fit in the car Im afraid that I would be riding the clutch all the time!!! I found my left knee up into the door panel?? What is going on has my dream fallen apart? what do you guys do with your left foot when you are not ingauging the clutch??

Help please!!!

If not having a dead pedal gets you this upset you may want to think about another car? Viper was not build to make you comfortable, but rather allow you to take the ride of your life.

Even with the adjustable pedals cranked away from you. Im 5'8" 230 and have a hard time reaching the pedals

. I cant imagine that 5 inches would make a big difference. I have a friend that is 6'4" and he didnt have any complaints when he drove it. I think you will get used to it.

Yes, they adjust, and you don't have to put them in the "upright" position before racing. The adjustment is parrallel to the floor, so their movement back or forward does not effect their effectiveness.

My friend is taller than you and probably weighs more than you and he had the same problem. The problem was solved when he got a seat lowering kit that cost ~$200 and lowered the seat 1.5". When he did that he fit into the car very comfortably and was able to rest his foot under the pedal with no problem. The dealer installed it before he picked it up. This will also solve your potential helmet problem.
That is the solution.

I'm 6'2" and 240 lbs. and am comfortable. I can wear a helmet and I have an RT! On long jaunts I take off my left shoe and rest my foot under the clutch pedal.

SSpeed Racer,

I live in Mission Viejo too and have an 01 GTS. I'm 6'-0" and about 195 lbs. I fit fine but probably would benefit from lowering the seat 1" or so. Dave Jenkins at Neighborhood Service (across from Lion Country Safari) said he can lower the seat but I haven't done it yet. If you're long in the torso you may want to do this. I did take off the sun visors as some have suggested on this board. That helped a bit.

There is plenty of leg room as the pedals are adjustable fore and aft. Plus the steering wheel tilts up and down. The footwell is quite tight due to the intrusion of the rather large engine/transmission. I missed the dead pedal at first (both my Boxster S and Z3 have one) but soon got used to it. Don't notice it anymore.

If you want to get together sometime e-mail me.

BTW I got my car from Bill at Pemberton. I highly recommend you contact him if you haven't already. Also, Dave Jenkins is a great guy to have work on your car. He's installed the K&N's, smooth tubes, and Corsa exhaust for me.

Good luck!

I just rest both feet on the gas pedal. Seriously, the seat lowering kit is great. Shorter friends have a hard time seeing over the hood when they drive my car but I can wear a helmet with the hard top on and clearance is just fine. Sitting in the passenger seat, I can't keep my head straight up with the top on. I didn't buy the car to ride shotgun anyhow.

BUY IT!!!
I'm sure, with use of the pedal adjustment, and seat lowering, and the pleasure you will derive from driving this awesome car, you will not experience ANY discomfort.
Good luck!

You may want to take a Z06 for a ride before you make up your mind. I too have always wanted a Viper and still do but after driving the Z06 I decided to go with that. It has a dead pedal and is alot more comfortable. I think it sounds better too. Don't get me wrong I love and still want a Viper but everybody told me if you could only have one, get the vette. I am glad I did. I am sure the Viper is a little quicker and can't be beat for the Gawk factor but the vette is a better all around car. I will still get my Viper some day but am glad I opted for the vette right now. I don't want to upset you guys, the Viper definetly has its strong points like brute speed and some might say looks (can you say clown shoe ;-) ) personally I like the looks of both. But to drive I think the Z06 is much more enjoyable. Try it, you may be glad you did. Again, I am not trying to piss anybody off here recomending the vette on a viper forum. As I said, they are both great cars with different strong points but, from reading your post I think you may be happier in a Z06 like myself. Being able to buy the Z new opposed to a used Viper was a big factor in my decision also. I also wish I knew the pedal were ajustable before my test drive in the Viper. My knees were hitting the dash when I moved the seat up enough to work the clutch. Good Luck with whatever you get. You can't go wrong either way.

revlimiter, you need to drive the Z06 not a standard vette. Big difference. I would take the Viper over a standard vette anyday. The Z levels the playing field a little. If you want the gawk factor or need to say you are the fastest even if it is at the cost of some comfort then go for the Viper. As I said either way you really can't go wrong. They are both great cars with different strong points. I guess it depends what you are looking for. Not everybody enjoys the attention a Viper will get you. I wouldn't mind having both if I could afford them. Since I could only afford one I went with the Z for now.
