Help me build a custom exhaust

Well I have been looking to get an exhaust set up so I can have something to keep me busy when I get back from deployment. I’m a young newly wed in the Navy so I don’t have alot of money to spend right now, so I’m trying to buy the right parts (used if I can get them)at the right time. I was considering doing a rear muffler delete but the kits where close to 500 bucks. Then DON SCHARF AUTOMOTIVE hooked me up on a great deal on what I believe to be used Corsa muffler. When I get back I have been thinking about to options and wanted options of the VCA members.

Option 1. Pull out the entire stock exhaust system and find a shop in San Diego that can make a matching copy in 3" mandrel bent and add Hi flow cats and the muffler then bolt it up. I think that I still will be way under what just a Corsa catback cost new.

Option 2. Just get adapters to bolt up the 3" muffler to the 2 ½” stock pipes. Then have the resonator and cats cut out and just add 2 ½” high flow cats.

The questions I have are, is the extra 1/2" in diameter piping worth the money.

Just so everyone knows I have been doing my best to use the search function but I don’t have a lot of internet time will on deployment to sit down and read all the post like I need to.

always mod with the end in mind. will you be doing any other performance mods? headers, heads, forced induction, etc. if not 2.5 in is fine imo.

hiflows and your muffler delete is a fine starting point (again, depending on planned future mods & budget)

I plan on doing heads, cam or S/C in the LONG future, Like 2 or 3 years. Right now im looking at R/R and gears to hold me off for a bit

I was looking at that, I didn’t see any stock exhaust with just a corsa muffler and high flows. Will the diameter of the pipe effect the sounds very much?

I've felt that it produced a more throatier sound. My GTS has stock headers followed by three inch, no cats, not sure of the muffler brand and it sounds as good as any I've heard.

My two cents worth.. Planning ahead is important. I would suggest to save some dough. Take the car to a reputable exhaust shop and have them remove the stock rear muffler and replace it with pipe. Cost me about 70.00 bucks to have this done on my 1996. Then you can go with some borla xr1 round race mufflers to replace the resonantors. About 85.00 bucks a piece. You can get them in 2.5 or 3 inch in and out. Check summitracing.com for those. Last but not least a set of hi-flow cats. I am running random tech and like them but of course we all have opinions. Oh by the way this is not quiet. But I like the way it sounds.

I was thinking along those same lines as you and doing the straight pipes with some sort of race muffler. But I did already get the Corsa piece so I think im going to try to stick with that. Any buddy have an idea on the cost to have a 3in system made to replace the stock one? Right now im kinda leaning towards just putting the muffler on and cutting out the stock cat and resonator and just add some 2 1/2" random cats. Although a full 3” could handle some power down the road

imo, if coin is an issue now, 3in for now is mostly for bragging rights, even though it may sound different, better, as you will have 2.5 in / 3 in transitions. once you really start modding and "need" 3in, it will be only a small part of your modding expenses to upgrade to 3in. (again, imo)

also, you will add drone, though your corsa rear muffler assembly will help reduce it over straight pipe.

either way, your car will feel like a different car with just hiflows and your corsa rear muffler assembly

For future mods I would recommend buying 3 inch parts and using reducers, that way when you do upgrade to 3 inch pipe you dont have to buy cats again.

I am doing the same when I get home from Korea in July. I have Belangers and Borla catback and whatever piping is missing (as i bought it used) will be custom made and I will throw on Bassani mufflers/high flow cats. I hope it sounds awesome! I will post up video!

That’s exactly what I was thinking just use 3" parts that I can reuse later.. I think I have a pretty good idea on what im going to due. I keep you guys posted. Any buddy have a 3" to 2 1/2" reducer clamp part number?
