still trying to finalize the repairs.
Tick noise. Loud. Louder than a normal lifter.
Here is what I tried:
1. unplug fuel injectors 1 at a time, no change in sound
2. pull spark plug wires 1 at a time, no change in sound
3. pulled valve cover, watched rockers, used stethascope, inconclusive.
4. checked plugs, all look clean and fresh.

I was under the assumption that if it were rod/piston/main problem that pulling the plug would change the sound due to running that cylinder dead.

anyone else have this severe of a sound from a lifter?
tends to quiet upon rev, but may still be faintly heard.

Anyone live around TAMPA/OLDSMAR FL familiar with these sounds/problems? ? ?
I guess I may have to give up and take to a tech.....just like doing things that hard way....THANKS

Borrow an infrared temperature sensor and see if all exhaust runners are same? Might help start to narrow it down to "where."

Any chance it's an exhaust manifold leak?

not the lifters.
Ran car with valve covers off.
All pushrods have good oil flow.
applied pressure to each pushrod to eliminate "slack", without any change in sound.
changed motor oil.
tried mechanics stethescope on each rocker/cylinder without a pinpoint.
WHY WOULD THE SOUND GET QUIETER WITH MORE RPM? ? I would think that a rod/piston would get worse with more RPM? ?

Check the "keepers" that hold the valves. My car had a ticking sound, and it turned out to be a damaged keeper, replaced under warranty.

I had a loud ticking sound last year and it turned out to be a leaking header gasket. Changed the gasket and ticking went away.

Oil pressure increases with RPM. If this is the case a leaking lifter could be the problem. What is your oil pressure range.

I ran over a rubber cone at an autocross and pushed the flimsy aluminum bellhousing inspection cover against the flywheel. At higher RPM it went away.

ahh, the sound of a cracked piston skirt. #7.

Let this be a warning for anyone buying a motor that has been damaged. As you may know, this car was in a bad wreck. It broke and swallowed part of the intake. While I did take off the heads and freshen them, I did not turn motor over and inspect the bottom end. Hopefully, others can avoid from my mistake. Not really a huge deal, just part of the fun of the hobby!

Interesting,
what part of the intake did it swallow?
Did you notice any marks on the #7 piston top?

It broke off about the first three inches of intake. Since it was passenger side broke, the driver side had the most of the pieces. I do recall this particular cylinder having a slightly marked piston top. I did indeed have 8 intake valves bent(but only 3 touched pistons) This cylinder did have a piece of intake wedged in the valve.

Hindsight is much better than 20/20.
