Help, One or two mufflers on each side of Gen 1?

I have dropped the Cats on my 94RT10 and would like to kick out the factory restrictive mufflers and go with an aftermarket one on each side. Unfortunately all of the after market mufflers are only 20” to 26” long in the body and I know that this is going to be way too loud. Has anyone tried going with 2 * 20” by 2 ½” in and out and if so how much more does the 2 mufflers silence it over the 1 on each side? Or is it still to loud or it just plains sounds terrible and not even worth it.

Any recommendations on what to run?

Thanks

Tim

7 years ago, I used just one one Dynomax stainless steel muffler on each side w/ no cat and the sound was perfect. Those muffs were 6" diameter as I recall, they 'just fit' under the side sill.

That is what I am running, the Dynomax Ultraflows(although I do have the rear exhaust on my Gen I). If that gets to be too loud, you can place the Dynomax race mufflers in the place where your cats were to help cut the noise down.

I have had two systems in my Gen I, in addition to the factory system. The first was created and installed by Watson Engineering and used Walker mufflers that are about 30" long. It was of course catless and connected to the flexible pipe. That system sounded much better than stock and helped performance. Never had it dynoed in that condition but it felt stronger than stock and with only a few other things could keep up with Gen II's. This system was not too loud. I had it made so that I sould if needed switch back to the stock system for inspection, etc. The picture below shows both the system with long Walker mufflers and the stock cats and mufflers.

I currently have Borla headers and 3" Belanger exhaust. The Belanger uses Dynomax stainless steel mufflers. This system is LOUD. I like it but it is more than most people would like. But it is just a toy so it has to sound like a toy.

Ron,

On the Walker system was this a 2 1/2" in and out on a 5" body or was it a 6" body, was this exhaust a little quieter, any real power difference between it and your Borla system?

I know that dropping my Cats has made a noticeable difference in power, sounds marginally better and the volume is not that much louder. I hope to increase my power by the same amount and not end up losing any, not to be any louder and hopefully it won’t sound any worse than it does now or what it did with the cats on. At this time I can run with and pull on a few Gen 2’s up to 100 mph when they start to pull and I would hate to loose this advantage.

Thanks

Tim

Itis 2 1/2 in and out. I believe the body is 5 inches. It fit in the sill very comfortably. If you look at th epicture above it looks like it is smaller diameter than the original muffler.

Like I said I did not dyno it. But there was a noticeable increase in power and throttle response. The Borla and 3" system is way louder and performs better. But of course costs much more and prevents the wife from riding in it (is that a good or bad thing?).

While you are at it, go 3" all the way, makes nice difference on Gen 1!
I have no cats, one Dynomax Bullet muffler on both side and it sure is loud. At least that what my neighbours tell me....:)

Dude, not to beat up on ya, especially since the thread about the viperclub .com site was nuked, but how come in your auction on Ebay for your exhaust system give a HP number if your never dynoed it?

Using a GTech Pro before and after. I have chassis dyno numbers from after (with other mods as well) but not before. Thus any number is really an estimate (I hardly take GTech Pro horsepower numbers as gospel). I also know of quite a few others around here that made the same exhaust change (it was a common mod back in the mid 90's). Watson Engineering (the company that made that system) is also the one that made the exhaust in a similar way for the original Viper Indy pace car. I used the same design and calibration. That combination was good for more than 15 hp.

Nice that you are noticing the Ebay stuff!

That is reasonable, I think you actually low balled the amount of increase, I would have bet it was closer to a 30RWHP increase as bad as the stock exhaust flows.

Probably not 30 as I am pretty sure the combination of the exhaust, calibration, K&N's and smooth tubes was around 35. Still a very good bang for the buck as that combination ran total of less than $500. And the best thing is that is sounded better and got rid of the hot sills.

I am installing the RSI "off-road" cat elimination system in the coming weeks to do the same on the SRT. This time though I have before dyno numbers and will be able to say what the improvement is.

I have not dynoed it with the Borla and Belanger system. I am hoping/expecting about 420. I was just under 400 with the above combination along with port matching and some other minor massaging. Not expecting too much from the Borla (they are a claimed 15 hp improvement) and 3", so around 20 overall. Remember though 400 in a Gen I is more than 400 in a Gen II as the Gen I has a more full torque curve, especially down at low rpms.

Still waiting for Sean to make a Gen I twin screw system :)
