Bland styling, black paint - the ultimate combination in stealth technology. I guess my new VGX will look just like that.

When I want to be a proud Viper owner, I'll drive the 96 GTS. When I want to be invisible, I'll drive the 03. Guess that means no miles on the 03.

Dean,

Here's a better summation...

-When I want to pose and look cool and try for maximum attention, I'll drive the GTS

-When I want to go fast, or turn quick, or actually brake from 60 in less than 200 feet and without locking up my right front, I will drive my SRT.

How many miles each will have, would depend on how much you like to pose vs. how much you like to DRIVE.

*cough* NHRA sez convertibles running faster than 12 secs require roll cage
*cough* '01 GTS 60-0 in 110 ft thanks to ABS
*cough* longer wheelbase == slower turn-in
*cough* *hack* *sigh*

Hell, if Autoform can make a '02 GTS look like a '03, maybe they can make a '03 look like an '02...

Road and Track out today...." the Vipers ability to explode out of the blocks hasn't changed. What has changed is it's handling ability.......The old car felt ham-******, the new Viper is more like harnessed fury waiting to be released.....Having discovered that the Viper feels as athletic as it looks, I enjoyed watching my qualms about this reborn icon disappear in a cloud of tire smoke" Oh well... I had to do it, could not stop myself, calling Mike Brunton...you're on.

Actually Ben, the NHRA rules state that COUPES running 11.99 or better require a roll bar. Convertibles running 13.99 or lower also require a roll bar. 10.99 or below requires a full roll cage. The fact that the Viper will run below 12.00 is a non-issue... thats what you have to deal with when you have a fast car. It's not like it's a complaint with the SRT.

Suuuuure it does. I've never seen a *single* test where this was true. The problem with the Vipers brakes has NEVER been lack of ABS, it's the propensity for the front (one of the fronts usually) to lock up too early. Also, the car does not get good enough weight transfer to put enough pressure on the front tires, causing them to bite harder and stop quicker. The car just pushes the tires forward, it doesn't push down on them. I'd like to see ANY test of the ABS Viper anywhere CLOSE to 110'... and Dodge PR material doesn't count.

Maybe in general... but let's not make TOO many generalizations just yet. ALL that have driven the car have remarked on how much easier the car is to drive - especially near the limit. I'm sure it makes folks feel good to assure themselves that the performance on the SRT won't be that good (only 50hp? shat, we can get that with headers!), but what will the argument be when the glowing reviews come in? Surely you don't think the PVO boys would make a car that was WORSE then a GTS in braking or handling do you?

Or, the folks whining about the design could just go buy something that makes them happy - like GT-40's and let the folks who like the SRT enjoy themselves without constant harassing and insult??? Just a thought...

Mark,

I dunno what you're talking about - I've never seen you really DRIVE your GTS EVER!!!!

Posing doesn't count.

Hey, are you still up for the AutoX? how about the road course? Or the drag strip? Or are you still indisposed???

Same ROAD & TRACK article:
" When I First Glimpsed the slick new skin encasing the Dodge Viper, my heart skipped a beat. I wasn't swooning from the shape, but rather from a nagging feeling that maybe this American icon had lost its edge. In place of a bulbous, brooding brute of a car that you couldn't help but love for its sheer outrageousness, sat a muscular athlete with the chiseled, clean-cut look of an All-American. "

First impressions don't lie! " New clean-cut look " sounds like a Vette not a BAD ASP VIPER!!!

If that's the worst thing they can come up with to say about the SRT - I would have a hard time believing they don't like it.

I remember comments on the prior GTS as "cartoonish", "a joke", "unrefined".. "crude". The new one is "a chiseled, clean-cut, all-American athlete".

Devildog, they could say it was the best Viper they ever saw, and I'm convinced you would find a way to take it as an insult

. I think you and O'Malia you shoudl start your own club called Posers Really Interested in Cracks about Killing the Srt. Actually, you might not qualify - you're not a poser.

>> '01 GTS 60-0 in 110 ft thanks to ABS
> Suuuuure it does. I've never seen a *single* test where this was true.

When the '01s first came out, I tested mine and got consistent stops of 110-112' I've since repeated the test and gotten the same result. If you have a reference to third-party brake distance testing for an ABS-equipped Viper, please cite it --I have found none. Your explanation of the physics of braking is inapplicable to ABS-equipped vehicles, as they don't experience front lockup.

As for NHRA rules, most Gen-II drivers at most tracks end up running low/mid 12s in their cars. You can do this in any Gen-II car and be fine with just a helmet; in an SRT you need a 5-point roll cage (bar, bracing, and driver's sidebar) and 5-point restraints to run below 13.99. That is a MAJOR problem with anyone wanting to "go fast" in their SRT.

I agree, jury's out on the SRT's handling; a longer wheelbase will make it less twitchy (which everyone has remarked already) but also slow down transient response (which catches some drivers out, but I happen to like)

More generally, I didn't come here to insult the SRT or those who choose to buy it (I may eventually join their ranks). However, to state that a gen-II can't "go fast, or turn quick, or actually brake from 60 in less than 200 feet" is sheer bunk, and as my wont I will label it as such and provide supporting data.

Mike, *I* can properly threshold brake a non-ABS car. *My* Viper will certainly stop without drama in much less distance from 60mph with simple pad upgrades. *I* have properly corner-weighted and "wedged" my suspension to where RF lockup is a non-issue. *My* GTS is a sure-footed and nimble handler - thanks in particular to a wave of Erik Messley's magic wand.

These simple enhancements have culminated in a full 4 second lap time improvement at my favorite "neighborhood" Naval Air Station - all else being equal. And, I look *GOOD* doing it.

I thought about this a few months back, how do you track the SRT? I need to have my hardtop on and wear a helmet because I am below 14 sec.
