there is no debate. a properly setup high-caliber sports car will lap faster than a properly setup high-caliber bike- everything else equal.

take it from somebody who rode liter and above sport bikes for the last 8 years.

however, nurburgring is fairly straight so a bike might have a slight advantage methinks... contrary to popular belief a more technical course is more advantageous to the car..

Markus,

You need to get out there and beat that 7 minute time with your silver beast. Otherwise we will have to keep enduring the chorus of Skyline groupies who say that Skylines are faster than Vipers stock because of their record breaking Nurburgring times.

When pushing the extreme limits of performance is concerned, the car will always be faster/quicker/better handling than the bike. At Big Willow, the fastest time is 1 minute 6 seconds, by Mario Andretti in a classic Indy-car. Fastest bike time was on a 750 cc race bike, 1 minute 19 seconds. No comparison at all.

But realize those incredible car times were produced with a million-dollar race-only machine that needs an entire pit crew to keep running, and must be torn down/refreshed after each race. Something you will never see in the streets, nor on race tracks, unless you are a pro F1/CART racer.

When you are dealing with street-legal machines however, the gap is much closer. No street legal sports car will ever come close to that 1:06 time held by Andretti. Modern street legal superbikes can run almost as fast as true race bikes; the crop of new literbikes can push 1:25 lap times (stock) at Big Willow. I'm not sure what the best sports car times at Big Willow are, but I think it's in the low 1:30s or so (at least for the Corvettes).

There are so many variables involved in comparing bike and car performance; track conditions, weather, amount of straights vs curves, driver skill, etc. I think it's tougher to push a bike to it's limits than it is to push a car to it's limits, since bikes are much less forgiving if mistakes are made, and psychologically more challenging, since you have (basically) no protection if you crash. But out on the streets, most modern sportbikes will be very formidable, especially if the rider is skilled, and knows the road.

I will say that the Honda VFR750 is NOT a very good comparison for a car vs. bike.. the VFR is sort of like the BMW 330 of bikes - handles good, pretty quick, but far from the fastest or best handling, more of a comfort machine than anything.

There was an article in MT I think of a Yamaha FZR I beleive against a Viper. Anyone into bikes knows that article was a joke.. although MT was pretty up front about the results. The bikes can pull as much corner speed as a street car can - and in the straights it's not even close. The GSXR1000 *demolished* a Z06.. it had higher turn speed and much higher straight speed. The Viper would fare no better.

If you want to compare stock vs. stock, I believe a top performing bike like the R1 or GSXR1000 will demolish any street car including Vipers. Modified vs. modified, you need to get to a very high level of car before the car gets quicker. F1 cars are so much faster than race bikes it's ridiculous.

EDIT:

Wanted to bottom line it and say that no Viper is going to stand a chance on virtually any race track against a modern high-performance 600cc or literbike - wont be close... however it takes alot to really push a bike - much less in a car. Stock vs. stock, bikes are way faster straight and in turns. Modified vs. modified, bikes still win. Pro vs. pro - cars are way out in front.
