Are you running those DDMs? I bought the Ebay ones everyone raved about but didn't like the flickering at startup so I'm looking for something nicer. I had it narrowed down to McCulloch or Philips but if those DDMs INSTANTLY fire up, then those are in the running as well.

Ebay/Cheap, No-Go
McCulloch/Philips/Expensive, No-Go

I was seeking something in the mid-range. The ones i bought a couple years ago were Apexcones for 70bucks each set. They work great and the ballasts look real nice. Prob is that that the DDM site where i purchased them from dosnt sell the apexcones anymore. Now all they carry is the slimline ones which are prob fine.

Looks like the mystery ballast #10 passes all their tests, and the Philips does as well with the exception of the weatherproofing. Seeing as how the car isn't a daily and doesn't see rain I imagine it'll be fine.

Has anyone else done what that site said and hardwired their HIDs to the battery post? Did it make a difference?

The headlamps are easy as pie. For the foglights, small tiny little hands help, otherwise, just buy a pack of band-aids and you are good to go.

no, not necessary. that note is confusing though, i think they are talking about if you Add an extra set of lights to not tap into existing wires...:dunno:

FYI:
Stock Halogen's require 45-55watts as where HID's are only 35watts.
So there no need to worry about stressing the stock wiring as some might have you believe.

The only reason you would hard wire your HID's to the battery is if your factory headlamp harnass cannot withstand the draw of the HID ballast when turning on. HID's do draw less power but on startup can draw a lot more then OEM bulbs. This is a non issue for the Viper but with vehicles like Scion is a requirement or you will melt the OEM harnass.

Also the OEM high beams are 9011 bulbs. The 9011 bulb uses the same keyway as a 9005 bulb but it is not the same bulb. If you were to upgrade to HID's you would purchase a 9005 kit for that as well.

Over the years I have purchased HID headlights from the following link and have had no issues at all. They are not too expensive and they come with a year warranty on the bulbs and ballasts. The owner of the company tried to get a sponsor account here but I am not sure what happened with that.

Explaining Viper things to you
go here
SharpHID.com - Automotive HID Xenon Conversion Lighting Products
click on Installation
go down a few links to my writeup on 92-02 Viper

I haven't done the fogs, but the basic wiring is the same
the fogs are H3 bulbs

Why given the choice of mounting the ballasts in the headlight housing, or in your writeup taking a 1" hole saw to the housing to fit the connector through for an external ballast, would you want to go the external route? And put a hole in a $600 housing?

All the guys that I know have mounted them inside the headlight housing. There's tons of room to mount a standard-sized ballast.

I Didnt mount in the housing because i didnt want her to be cramed inhibiting the ability to dissapate heat.

My Ballasts look cool with a raised machined logo on top. Mounted in clear site on top of the fender lining just under the hoodvents. Whenever i pop the hood the question is always asked, "Wooe, what are those?". This leads into the conversation about how i do most of my own work on the viper which amazes them even more:)

hmmmm, maybee i should get a small sneakypete emblem/sticker to put in the open space under apexcone...

That's still a good spot to mount your foglamp Ballast. I used HIDs for hi and low because once I'd installed the low beam it made the stock High beam totally useless since the HID low beam was brighter and showed more road than the factory high beams. When I click on the HID Hi, it takes a few seconds but it does improve the vision.

You mount the Ballast inside the bumper/nose if you wanted. I used the two behind the grille opening nuts for my SRX radar detector mounting brackets. Some people use them for tow hooks and you could easily build a sheet metal bracket for your Ballast. Because of rock chips and rain I wouldn't do that, but ...
