I took my 98 GTS out today and it was so muggy that I turned the AC on. Its cool but not what I would say cold. Is that normal? Should it very cold?

Thanks

I'm a sweat factory and my A/C is enough to keep me comfortable on very hot days and nice and cool on regular hot days.

The VIpers air is actually pretty cold.. Make sure there are no leaves, etc blocking the air going over the A/C cooling fins. Check your sight glass and make sure you have more than enough freon....

John, When working properly...meaning good suction and discharge pressures...AND a CLEAR site-glass...meaning a FULL charge...you typically will discharge 50 degrees give or take...

Yes it will get you "cold" when working right!

John, turn it on and put the fan on high...check the site glass behind the right front tire..on top of the reciever near the charging ports...if you see bubbles..you need to add some freon.

Hate to sound like a total poser here, but can anyone post a pic on what it should look like? Is the site glass the little round glass on top of the tube? Looks a bit like what's on non-maintanence batteries'? I don't see any bubbles in mine. Could it be I'm out altogether?

My AC has started getting less potent right before summer and weeks before my drive to Vegas. No way I'm driving through the desert in the middle of summer with weak AC!

On a 80 degree day I still can't leave the AC on high because it gets too cold. I do wish there was an outlet vent on the left side of the steering wheel though...

It's should feel cold to the touch. If not have it checked for leaks. But even when it's working great it still has to fight with that engine heat. In the summer it's OK for one person. But with two guys to share the vents on a 90 degree day, your pushing it.

Warfang, here ya go .

The site glass is between the 2 black bolts on top of the reciever drier. (clear lens) The BLUE cap is the low or suction side, and BLACK port is high side or discharge/liquid line. Charge on the "Blue" cap line...when adding freon...put fan on high and charge to a FULL/CLEAR siteglass(no bubbles) With Viper at an Idle. The suction line will start to sweat condensate and get cold when fully charged.

Each person has his (her) own comfort level and the Viper A/C doesn't fulfill my needs even when working just like the book says.

The optimistic service manual "normal" discharge temps at the center register are above what many other R134 vehicles can achieve.

But........It's better than nuthin'.

The factory AC, working properly, will freeze the knuckles of your right hand and face, while your feet and left hand cook.

I'll bring the shells, torches and pitchforks. On the opposite side of the temp spectrum... I want to warm my hands with the vents when it gets cold. How come the vents can't blow hot air like every other damn car I've ever owned?

You're the best. :headbang:

Now I don't see any bubbles at all... am I completely empty or is there a clog somewhere?

Not to get off subject here, but that is a product almost every GenII guy would buy. Box that lets the temperature dial work on vent & floor. Heat available from vents & cold avail. at your feet,,, seems so logical, like every car I have ever owned.

Warfang...is the ac compressor actually running? Is the suction line cold? Do you have any restrictions (leaves, etc.) in the ac condenser in front of the radiator? If the ac compressor is running , and you are not getting cold air...have someone put a set of refrigerant gauges on the system and check the pressures. It is possible that the compressor is inefficient. (Bad Valves) If your system is flat out of freon...it will not run the compressor, because the low pressure switch locks the ac compressor circuit off. Take the high and low side caps off the fittings and depress the schraeder valve stems with a (small pocket screwdriver)and see if there is any freon in the lines. If the compressor is running, feel the lines...suction line cold....high side HOT...Is there any ice forming on the reciever drier? If so there could be a restriction.

Keep me posted

Dave: thanks for your concern. The ac in the Viper was replaced by the owner a couple months before I bought the gts... I'm hoping it's not problematic. I'll check on all of your questions in the morning.

Coincidentally, my SUV's ac has been blowing warm too. I bought a recharging kit and it was simple to recharge. Check out the website. It even has good how-to videos.

I have added the correct amount of freon (by pressure guage)on my 97 GTS, but the site window still looks cloudy. High pressure side gets warm to touch, low pressure side is cold, but no frost. Problem is the site window still looks cloudy. Air temp is pretty cool, but not cold.

Question is, why am I still cloudy? air in system?

97 Fatboy...If you have any bubbles in the siteglass, you are still Undercharged. A CLEAR site glass means a FULL charge. You cannot determine a full charge by a pressure guage. The Kind that gives you a red/green /safe scale.

If you want to add the "exact" amount of freon... For Example ...my 02 GTS takes 1.81 pounds of R-134a....You would have to reclaim the freon in your system and then install a Vacuum Pump to evacuate the system to 28 inches of Vacuum....then WEIGH in the correct charge with a ref. scale.

Add more freon untill the glass is clear. Turn the Fan on High and let the Viper Idle. You should duscharge 45 to 50 degrees temp. thru the air vents.

The sight glass should be viewed only when the engine rpm is well above an idle, 1100-1200 rpm is recommended; bubbles at idle will often disappear at a faster engine speed.

Frost on the suction line is relative to the humidity in the air, on dry days frost might not form but the line should still be cold to the touch.

Even with the refrigerant system working at its best, a misadjusted water control valve can bleed hot air into the heater core and raise the temperature at the discharge registers. Feel the temperature of the heater supply and return hoses.
