I tried removing this the other day and it wasn't budging after removing all what I thought were the necessary screws. How do you remove the lock mechanism for the rear hatch, maybe that was holding it in as I couldn't figure out how to get that out.

Year of car would help. If you have a GTS I remember finding some screws behind the license plate if you haven't found those already.

I have a 97 GTS. I removed all the screws behind the license plate and the ones in the little vents and it still wouldn't budge.

Any other tips on this? I have a feeling this will be a work on viper weekend for me.

Have you removed the rear lights? There are two black metal bars behind the light clusters and below the light clusters are some additional fixings. You do not have to remove the key barrel.

Its a pain undoing the light clusters, they are held in place by black plastic nuts which you have to remove from inside the trunk. Use a socket with an extension bar and its worth putting some sticky tape inside the socket to stop the nuts from falling off the end of the socket, especially when you put things back.

I will load up a picture for you in a few minutes :)

No I haven't, do those need to come out first? I thought they would come out with the rear panel

Have a close look at this picture, in the foreground you can see in the area where the LH light cluster should be the Black strap I was talking about.

If you then take a close look at the removed back panel in the right hand corner of the garage you can see the other fixing points i mentioned.

Seems obvious now, but I had the same issue first time I
took mine off.

The sides of the panel (where the two small screws near the
vent are) the panel is designed to bend outward like a spring
into the quarter panels. You need to press lightly on the vents
and squeeze the panel out from under the quarters. Think of
it like a medicine bottle cap. Then there are three bolts behind
the plate. Then you need to go inside the trunk, pull the carpet
and remove the hatch lock. Once you remove the lock cylinder
the panel should pop out. It may be tight and put up a fight,
just be sure you don't scratch the hell out of the top of the
bumper cover. Good luck!

How do you remove the lock mechanism for the rear hatch
- Pull the carpet away from the back of the car.
- There are two (10mm I think) nuts holding the hatch cables
onto the key barrel.
- Once the cable plate is removed there is a large nut holding
the barrel to the body. On my car its finger tight, but once off
the barrel will slip out of the back of the car. You will need to
remove it to get the panel off.

Hey Fatboy how do you remove the 3rd brake light? I know there is a small 10mm nut on the inside, is that all it takes to remove it? Thanks!

Yes I think that's it, there is also a connector on the wiring harness to undo :)

The last time I had all that rear off was 2008, I had to remove the rear wing to get the car past the "Single Vehicle Approval" test after importing the car to the UK :)
