How to do a proper burnout?

I know that this might sound a little wierd, but I have a 99 Camaro SS and have never really done an all up in smoke type of burnout. I only have a couple days left at school and everyone has asked me to show them some stuff all year. since we are going to go to a "closed track" I just want to know how I should go about making a 30ft smoke stack. My car is stick and I have never even tried it. I have had it for 3 years, and I think that it is about time I atleast try it. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't want to make a fool of myself.

Line lock. If you got a stick, you may want to invest in a line lock (120$ bucks). The best way is to lock the fronts, then tach up to around 3K in first to start the heating, keeping an eye on the engine temp and RPM, if you have to shift into second with the RMPS still up to keep the car from hooking back up between shifts.

Release the line lock and roll out while slowly letting off the gas. Don't just up and "stop" a burnout.

To "cheat" use some bleach on the track for more smoke

maxx got it right on. if you dont want line lock, just rev drop and burn, wont be as spectacular a show though. also, the bleach thing a great FX item

Polka, if you rev up and dump the clutch, the clutch will not slip very much, so you really won't put any significant wear onto the clutch...In fact in this scenario you are purposely engaging the clutch as fast as possible (i.e. dump it) to get the end result - spinning...Now you will put load/strain on your drive train, and of course wear on the tires!

You need to hook up a Clorox bottle in the hatch with a small pump, a switch in the cab, and 2 nozzles in front of the rear tires. Light 'em up and flick the switch and watch 'em smoke!!!

p.s. Is straight bleach or a diluted solution better?

I know I've been down this road before, but I must be missing something.

While I'm not sure how much damage is done to the tranny, clutch, U joints, differential, tires, etc. by doing "burnouts", I am absolutely certain they don't increase the life expectancy of these parts. Moreover, what does it prove???? I can smoke the tires in my Durango, if I want to look like post pubescent adolesent.

Does testoserone preclude the presence of rational thought processes?

Not only do I not believe that you can "smoke the tires" on your Durango

, I am positive that you can't do a smoke show like I can do in a Viper.

Burnouts are easy....

Step 1) Rev to 5500RPM
Step 2) DROP clutch
Step 3) Hold on
Step 4) For added effect, turn wheel and do donuts, or wiggle rear end left and right
Step 5) For maximum fun-time, once tires start smoking, hold brake lightly (power will be enough to overcome braking on rear, but braking will be enough to hold front wheels).

No line lock needed!

Thanks for the bleach idea. Do you know where could I get some line lock? My tires are almost new, and I wanted to get rid of some rubber first. I know that this is immature and very adolescent, but I just want to have a little bit of fun with my car too! I think everyone has to try it at least once right?

I agree, Polka ... (what kind of name is that?) I say..... burn those tires into oblivion. Have fun. Life is short! Make sure that everyone sees you, especially the kid that hates you the most, and the girl you most want to ****.

I did the same thing in H.S., only I added some 360's with the burnout. I had to do something, it was in a '69 Dodge Dart, slant 6, with a 3-speed on the column. I did it during lunch time..... not too smart.

Do it at the end of the day, then just leave the lot and don't go back. That'll look cooler, plus it won't seem like you care about going back for approval.

Go buy a set of CHEAP used tires and mount them on some cheapie steel rims w/ the same bolt pattern! A 1 minute burnout will take 20K off a tire life. No sense waisting a good street tire.

Now, if your tires are old and worn.. go for it!

Burnouts will also increase your trans temps, but not so much as autos.

Someone may have refered to this idea earlier in the post, but I read the whole thing fast. So, I have heard of people taking the windshield washer kit out of a junkyard and filling it with bleach. Placed the two ejectors right infront of the tires and then when you hit the switch to the bleach will come out onto the tires just like the windshield washer fluid sprays onto the windshield. Then you are set!

And just out of curiosity...does bleach hurt the tires any i.e. soften them and make more rubber burn off?

Don Hiltz, I just came in from trying to smoke the tires in my Durango, and darn! No luck!! Can you please tell me what mods you've got to be able to pull that off?

I've got the 5.7 liter with tube and filter, but......maybe it's the 4WD! Or maybe I forgot the bleach! Maybe I need to wait for it to rain! (may be awhile here in West Texas!

Yikes 20 K miles. Pilots are only good for 15K anyways.
