I bought a Viper Service contract for a car out of warranty

There have been many posts on buying an extended warranty. Here is my experience. I bought a 1998 Viper that was out of warranty by about 60 days. The original owner attempted to add the warranty because he had another buyer if it could be done. His Dealer told him “NO”.

The car was so perfect, I bought it from him with no warranty. I thought I would try and add the warranty myself after the purchase. I called several Dodge dealerships in the area and they said NO to adding the factory extended warranty. They said that even 1 day out, and you can’t add it.

So I called Daimler Chrysler directly. They said “No Problem”. I was amazed that the dealerships could not sell it but DC could. You don’t have much room to negotiate price at this point. I just wanted the warranty. So I bought the Max Care zero deductible 7 year 50k mile warranty. There was a $100 penalty per year since the “in service date”.

No inspection of the vehicle was necessary. The warranty became active that day. The mileage and length of time was based on the “In Service Date”, or purchase date. So 7 years from 1998, so I am covered until 2005.

I would like to know if the Dodge dealerships could have added the warranty? If so, why would they have turned away my money? Bill P, do you have an answer?

I wanted only the DC warranty if at all possible. So many of the aftermarket warranties like to deny claims based on “Vehicle was used for racing”. A 5 point harness, Roll Bar, Headers, NOS, or any other single item would be proof enough for them to deny the claim. Then it’s your hired attorney money against their attorney’s to settle. Hey, I work for an insurance company.

Here is another rumor that keeps coming up. I have been told by Viper owners that the warranty is transferable only once. So the third owner would have no warranty. Under the original warranty, it does not matter how many owners there are. But there is some truth to this with the extended warranty. It can only be transferred once for a fee of $50 and DC must be notified within 60 days of the transfer.

Also if you have purchased a used Viper, you should call the DC consumer help number and notify them that you are the new owner. You will then be listed as the owner and receive notices of any recalls.

I am curious how much you paid for the extended warranty. I just bought one for my 1999 RT/10. I got it through a guy in our Viper Club, Southern Cal, who works for DC. It was supposed to be a great deal - dealer's cost - but I am wondering what a dealer charges for one.

Interesting side note: I am searching for an extended warranty for my GMC Yukon XL right now and was checking stuff out on the web yesterday. I find a site that sells extended warranties for "all brands". The site is Extended-Warranty-Pro.com and here is the kicker: They sell ONLY the DaimlerChrysler warranty (the same one most of us buy for our Vipers) and it covers ALL brands. Yep, I can actually buy a Maximum Care warranty for my GMC! Of course the catch is that I have to take it to a Chrysler dealer for warranty work, which I would think would be kinda goofy as they probably don't stock a single part for it. Oh, and one other note: The site says you can buy the warranty even if your 3/36 has already expired...

Of course I suggest you call Bill Pemberton at Woodhouse (800-889-1893) to get a quote from him. He will treat you right on your extended warranty needs!

Most of the Dodge dealers I've dealt with don't stock a single part for a Viper, so you should feel right at home!
