There have been many posts on buying an extended warranty. Here is my experience. I bought a 1998 Viper that was out of warranty by about 60 days. The original owner attempted to add the warranty because he had another buyer if it could be done. His Dealer told him “NO”.
The car was so perfect, I bought it from him with no warranty. I thought I would try and add the warranty myself after the purchase. I called several Dodge dealerships in the area and they said NO to adding the factory extended warranty. They said that even 1 day out, and you can’t add it.
So I called Daimler Chrysler directly. They said “No Problem”. I was amazed that the dealerships could not sell it but DC could. You don’t have much room to negotiate price at this point. I just wanted the warranty. So I bought the Max Care zero deductible 7 year 50k mile warranty. There was a $100 penalty per year since the “in service date”.
No inspection of the vehicle was necessary. The warranty became active that day. The mileage and length of time was based on the “In Service Date”, or purchase date. So 7 years from 1998, so I am covered until 2005.
I would like to know if the Dodge dealerships could have added the warranty? If so, why would they have turned away my money? Bill P, do you have an answer?
I wanted only the DC warranty if at all possible. So many of the aftermarket warranties like to deny claims based on “Vehicle was used for racing”. A 5 point harness, Roll Bar, Headers, NOS, or any other single item would be proof enough for them to deny the claim. Then it’s your hired attorney money against their attorney’s to settle. Hey, I work for an insurance company.
Here is another rumor that keeps coming up. I have been told by Viper owners that the warranty is transferable only once. So the third owner would have no warranty. Under the original warranty, it does not matter how many owners there are. But there is some truth to this with the extended warranty. It can only be transferred once for a fee of $50 and DC must be notified within 60 days of the transfer.
Also if you have purchased a used Viper, you should call the DC consumer help number and notify them that you are the new owner. You will then be listed as the owner and receive notices of any recalls.
