This DLM Viper is really over the top
eek.gif

We had unseasonably warm weather this past weekend, so I took the roof off the Yellow Beast and went out for a leisurely Sunday cruise. Out on highway 280 the sun was shining, the birds were singing, the bees were buzzing... wait, that's not a bee, that's a YZF-1000! Sure enough, a late-90s YZF1000 (predecessor to the R1) had pulled up alongside me and was revving his engine, apparently eager to collect another "cager" notch on his belt. Being a former rider myself, I recall that the YZFs trap in the low 130s in the 1/4, which meant that someone was in for a rude shock
yesnod.gif

At about 70 mph I dropped into 3rd gear and waved the YZF onward. He responded by tilting his helmet to indicate that *I* should go first. "Your funeral", I thought as I rolled into the throttle. I've learned better than to go WOT at such low speeds in the beast, but with warm tires it'll accept about 2/3 throttle without spinning, and that's what I gave it. The thrust was immediate and intense, the YZF's exhaust note drowned out by the bellow of my 488ci V10 at 10 lbs of boost. The bike immediately dropped back a carlength, then 2... 3... and slowed dramatically at about 110 as if its 'chute had been pulled. I let up a moment later rather than shift up to 4th, and we both coasted down to vaguely legal speeds. The bike pulled alongside again, the rider looking at me and shaking his tinted visor. I could almost hear the "what the F*CK" running through his head as he realized a car had just walked him like an errant dog Then, with a thumbs up and a wave, he gunned the bike and was off.

Later that day, I diced with an Aprilia 1000... but that's a story for a different time.

You might not want to know

Last time I talked to him, he was jerry-rigging something with a couple of big hairdriers and that old propane tank from my car as a fuel system. He figured at least 0.15 lbs of boost, and the propane jets will cool down the intake charge so it won't detonate and fracture your cast pistons. He's also going to put oil jets in front of your rear wheels, activated at full throttle, so when you hit the gas hard your tires'll spin and you'll feel like you're really going fast.

At least, that's what he told me. You never know with Doug, however... that all might be a cover story; he may just be working on porting your heads with a couple new tricks he's learned since he did mine, figuring out how to crank up the boost and reduce belt slip, working on better injector setups, and other boring stuff like that.

Have you run any of the new R1's yet? I just sold my 2k R1, that thing was fast. After riding it for a week and not even starting my Vette, I climbed into the car and thought, G*d.....this thing is a slow a** pig.

If I decide to keep the paid off Vette instead of getting the GTS, I may get a '03 R1.

Heh. I used to have a '98 R1 with some Graves Motorsports parts on it. Made 148 RWHP, weighed 400 lbs wet.

The Viper is faster.

Should we congratulate you for making a kill agaisnt a $6K motorcycle ? Your car costs how much ? $120K ?
All it takes is a $16K Turbo Busa to pull up next to you, which I sincerely hope will happen

Ahh, you didn't steep that low.. the classic "how much did it cost you" routine. That's usually saved for the ricer or mustang boards... But you had to drag it over on .org...
Actually I think comparing Treynors bad *** ride to ANY PRODUCTION motorcycle speed wise is a phenomonal feat... Don't ya think?

You see the point is, Most Bikes brag about how no car can beat them! Most people formerly including myself, Don't think a car can beat a bike! Well the fact is it happens! And I enjoy delivering a spanking!

and by the way, what does cost have to do with this?

You mean it's cheaper to make a 400 lb bike go fast than a 3,500 lb car? I knew I bought the wrong toy.

Haha,

Here we go again. I thought we all agreed that we need to compare stock verus stock and modified versus modified. If so, the bike will ALWAYS win.

Peace

Of course, this could all change if Dodge produces the "Tomahawk".

That is one scaaaaary bike guys.

So Dodge would rule in both cars and bikes ;-)

i bought a used year 2000 kawasaki zrx-1100 for $4,800 and put another $4,200 into it manking it faster, etc. i just ran a 10.77 at 129 mph in the 1/4 mile saturday here at my local dragstrip. the elevation at my track is 3100 feet. just curius has anybody run 10's in the 1/4 mile for less money invested than me. surely no car will top that kind of et and mph for the $$$$ invested.

In 1994-ish I was riding a Kawi ZX-11 which I purchased used for 4800. I put zero dollars into it. The magazines were running it at 10.29@130MPH.

i could buy a 89 mustang for 1500$ and put a big motor in it w/ nitrous and run 8's, but it's still be a POS, and not a viper, BFG.
