I parked my car yesterday at lunch time, and didn't notice that there was a landscaping boulder just below my sight line in front of my car. I ran right into this very pointy boulder and didn't even know I'd hit it. It wasn't until I returned to my car after lunch that I noticed this big pointy rock sticking a couple of inches into my front bumper (AAAAARRRRRGGGHH!!!) I was very unhappy, and was mentally kicking myself for doing something so dumb and careless. I was thinking about driving straight to the bodyshop to get it fixed, but I had to get back to work. When I got back to work and went around to the front of the car to inspect the damage, it was gone. Nothing. No dent at all. The plastic bumper had just popped back out. No damage to the paint. A tear in my clear bra, but that's it.

So, while Jeremy Clarkson may mock American cars and their plastic bumpers, I have to say that I am a convert.

I was talking to a bud who does paint/bodywork and he said that the Viper (and many other high end cars) have a ton of flex additive in the paint to help prevent rock chips and the like. No doubt that helped with your "big" rock chip!

Here in South Florida they mix crushed sea shell with the road tar. It is like glass and will chip the paint - particularly under the side sills. Clear bra applications help.
