Starting next week I will have a BIG BOY TOY of an X-RAY truck in NJ for a month doing some work for Homeland Security. The image of my car in my avatar was taken with a 450 KV source which can ********* 4" of steel. Our new truck is 3.8 MeV :eek: and can ********* 10" of steel. I need 4 jack stands and a low profile jack to get our cars up in the air so we can take an entire shot from the bottom of the tires up. I expect to be able to image the entire valvetrain with ease. Please post here if you can assist.

can hitting the car with that kind of radiation hurt anything? Heck, EEPROMs can be erased with UV light.

You would not hit living tissue with it, and I worry about the myriad electronic, rubber, plastic and other non-metallic parts being hurt by the X-ray radiation.

Avi, you have a PM

Keith,

The dose is ~ 100th of a chest x-ray.
The source is pulsed.
No issues with electronics or other materials.
At and above 10 MeV there can be issues especially if
continous and not pulsed.
It is like a HUGE checkpoint x-ray at an airport.
What the FDA calls cabinet safe.

Wow, you really are a Mad Scientist. :eek:

Yes, I admit it :cool:

Mr. Wizard,

My schedule may not permit a visit.

I will know more this week.

Let me see, you have a viper ($50000+) and a high tech mega dollar x-ray machine, but need to borrow someone else's jack and jack stands?
Just spend the $120 and buy a jack and stands for yourself. I really do not understand the logic of this request.

Yes, I have a Viper, a Mega $ machine and a WIFE too with limited storage space :rolleyes:
Plan B is just that: to do it myself :cool:
In addition I also wanted another Viper (RT/10 or GTS) to contrast to my ACR.

Mopar Steve,

We will be calling the Newark/Elizabeth area of NJ home for about a month. Exit 13A off the NJTPK.

Thanks.

BTW Lunch or dinner with me and my crew as well as a X-Ray printout of your Viper and a digital image are part of the deal too.

It was VERY cool to watch John and his crew, do his magic! I can only imagine the details when this new baby starts it scan!

John, can I take off my radioactive badge now? I've been wearing it for the last 3 years! LOL

Joe,

I still wear my dosimeter :eek:

I hope to have much better images than before.

A new Avatar is certain :cool:

Joe,

A dosimeter measures the amount of radiation exposure one gets from various sources.
Believe it or not the occupation with the highest exposure
per year is an airline pilot.
The underwear glowing can always come in handy...
Never know when you need a flashlight.

Craig,

Thanks for the suggestion.
We have thought about that and will see.
My real hope is to get a great image of the engine.
The car will be a bonus.

I used to sell Sperry 300 KV machines and the company later became Staveley. I am no longer in the NDT business, but who do you work for that has a 3.8 MeV portable x-ray machine?

Can you image someone was sitting in the car for a 3.8 MeV shot? I don't even know what 3.8 MeV are, but I'm reasonable sure the don't want to take a shot of it to the testicles.

As a goof, you should sit one of those medicals skeletons in the driver's seat waiving, just for effect. (Although with all that power, maybe a plastic skeleton won't read.)

John ACR - Ok, now you've started a debate in our office. So let me go to the expert with two questions.
1) How is 3.8 MeV compared to a Dr.'s X-ray?
2) What would happen if someone was smuggling people in a truck and they went through that X-ray? Fried?

Just curious :p

Re: I need someone in NY/NJ/PA with a jack and jack stands (X-Ray our Viper

Jerry,

I work for L-3 Com SDS.

LIVIPER,

I like the idea of a skeleton.
For X-Rays the key parameters are Voltage, Current and Dose.
Dental are usually 65-90 kV, 10 ma
Medical are usually 20-150 kV, 25-1000 ma
Doses vary greatly.

Dose information

Average per capita yearly dose equivalent from cosmic radiation: 270 microSievert (27 mrem).

Colorado (altitude: 3,200 m) 1.25 mSv/year (125 mRem/year) (exposures approximately double with every 1,500 m increase in altitude).

Average air flight at altitude: 5 uSv/hour (.5 mRem/hour) (Therefore a 6 hour flight = 30 uSv (3.0 mRem).

The Apollo astronauts received an average dose equivalent of 2.75 mSv (275 mrem) during a lunar mission.

Actual dose can vary depending on several factors, including film/detectors, scan speed, processing parameters, X-ray generator type, tube filter, use of grid, etc. Example doses from several sources were: .01 rad (10 mRad) for a chest. Skin dose for a chest x-ray on avg is .006 R (6 mR). A single abdomen view delivers about .275 R (275 mR) skin exposure.
If one was inside a vehicle while scanning with a 3.8 MeV source the dose would be ~ 1 to 2.5 mR.

When using high energy x-ray systems the cargo container/vehicle should first have a heartbeat monitor test to detect stowaways. At 9 MeV this is a real concern.
I hope I answered your question.

Re: I need someone in NY/NJ/PA with a jack and jack stands (X-Ray our Viper

LIVIPER,

Here is some handy radiation/dose info....

(1) The average background radiation at ground level is ~1 mSv/year;
(2) The radiation level at flight height is <0.005mSv/hr (5microSv/hr);
Flight crews are considered receiving occupational exposure.
(3) A typical chest X-ray is from 0.1mSv to 0.3mSv at skin (100-300microSv);
Medical exposure is not included in radiation protection limits.
(4) ICRP recommends 1mSv/year non-occupational exposure limit;
(5) NCRP recommends 1mSv/year non-occupational, frequent annual exposure limit;
NCRP recommends 5mSv/year non-occupational, infrequent annual exposure limit.
(6) The "typical" Dose per scan on a high energy truck and 450KV system is
<0.025mSv (25microSv);
The typical Dose roughly equals a coast-to-coast flight;
The typical Dose is an order of magnitude lower than a medical X-ray.

Re: I need someone in NY/NJ/PA with a jack and jack stands (X-Ray our Viper

Thanks. Pretty cool. I did't even know there was an x-ray that could view through 10 inches of steel. Crazy. I can't wait to see the images.

So this truck is less radiation than a medical x-ray? How is it so powerfull? And, if an accident were to occur, a human would survive a full scan in this truck?
