I\'d appreciate Tips for the Silver State 90 mile race

Susan & I are running Silver State later this month and would appreciate any tips on running this timed race. The course notes end 6 miles from the finish which is too much distance to fine tune.

We need all the help we can get to help the Viper team take out the Panteras, stangs, & that Baaaad Turbo Porsch from So Cal

so e-mail us any tips or spreadsheets you have.

Thanks, Marv S.

Hello,

the best way to do this, is to drive the course (backward) on the way to ELY. You can set all your waypoints if you are using a GPS. If you are not using a GPS, you can still note down the random mileposts etc, on the way.

if it's your first time, you will probably be going up with the "first timers" group, they will point out the locations and give a long winded but fairly useful chunk of information.

My navigator has better information on this portion...I'll see if I can convince him to post something.

that being said, in our first run in the may race, we didn't do
so well, due to lack of waypoints in the last 5.x miles and some timing problems. I think we have resolved those, so we are now
running in the faster class! (145)

It's a real fun race... the viper does very well at it, long sweeping turns at high speeds. You will probably decide that 125 will be to slow after the first time, but the rush is definatly there in a big way... hell, we got the rt/10 without the roof up to 174 on the way up to vegas...

125 average is still **** fast.... 145 should be scary

also, I would count on taking the "narrows" at less than 125. I took it at 110, that was fast. I will probably take it at around the same speed, even in the higher class.

Just go there for good time..........run 15 miles per hour over your target. the narrows, the unexpected, the invisible turn ahead hills, etc will adjust you close to your target.

Marv and Susan
Enjoy your first Silver State. You will have a blast and at the end realize your Viper makes it seem so easy you could have gone much faster, but that is what the SECOND Silver State run is for.
Do all the fun 1st timer stuff. Go to the Driving school (Dereck Bell) in Vegas, Drive the high speed convoy to Ely to get used to the high speeds, Drive the course backwards on the way up, and then again the day before the race (at moderate speeds to check markers).
Hang out at the football stadium to talk about the race with experienced racers, find someone to take your luggage to the finish line as you cannot carry anything in your car during the event, and do the Parade through town.
RACE DAY...Get up a little early. Full tank. Convoy to start line.finish line. Fill up again and empty your bladder. Stage where they tell you to, and BLAST OFF when the flag drops. Navigator must use hand signals to position your car, and as far as deciding who should drive it might just be fun to change positions at the45 mile mark. (Just kidding). The drive will be over before you know it. ENJOY

While course notes end 6 miles before the finish line, the mile markers don't. Determine at EXACTLY what time you need to arrive at the finish. Note along the route the EXACT time you should be there, then you will know if you need to go faster or slower. After the narrows everything comes together and becomes clear. Last mile is usually a final chance to make any SMALL adjustments in ETA. ENJOY THE RIDE!

Marv,

Look me up in Ely. I have run over 30 of these races and will fix you up. Not really hard at all. Just a little common sense and don't make it harder than it is. Can get you within a second easy.... after that luck starts coming in.

Regarding tire pressure...SUSTAINED speeds over 155
Mich. recommends 36-37 lbs. At your speeds 34 should be enough
to keep sidewalls firm.

Marv........
TIRE MANAGEMENT is your lifeline.

2 excellent commentators gave widely-varying PSI numbers, but do they/we KNOW what tires you are on?

I would definitley have the tires dismounted, thouroughly examined, and hi-low rebalanced before this event. You dont want an old wheel weight coming off......or a near-puncture going thru.

Be sure your rear quarter panel vents are clear and flaps functioning, (inside the GTS side cargo area) so that cockpit pressures to NOT blow your windows off-seal....The Year Matters here....some have dust plugs, some dust flaps.... Remove plugs! and allow air pressure to exit freely...that's what those mystery fender vents are for !
