If you are never going to drag race, why not go with a very short gear?

My car has the taller 345-30-19 rear tires. I want to install short gears. When I used the gearing calculator I see that a 3:73 gear with my tires is the same as a 3:54 with stock height tires. Thinking that a bolt on mod car might trap in the low 120s, and given that 3:73s at redline in 4th = mid 120s the 3:73 sounds like the perfect gear for drag racing. But the more I think about it, the more I realize I am never taking the car drag racing (worried about breaking things and I have never had fun at the drag strip), so why not go with monster short 4:10 gears. IGNORING TRACTION ISSUES, redline in 2nd with 3:73 = 71 mph whereas redline with 4:10 - 67 mph. Looking at how other muscle cars are geared, having 2nd top out in the high 60s sounds perfect for a monster 0-60 mph capability and a gnarly 0-100 mph capability, and if you do not have to worry about shifting to 5th at the drag strip (and given the retardedly tall 0.5:1 6th overdrive) what the heck. Make any sense? Anyone have 4:10 gears in a street driven car? I mean with my tall tires 4:10s are like 3:73s on a stock tired car, and lots of guys run 3:73 on the street.

5th gear with the stock 3.07 rear gear = 202 mph at 6,000 rpm's with stock tire height. i estimate i will need 600 rwhp to bust 200. once i accomplish this task then i will more than likely regear to 3.33 which should be better suited for the road racing tracks i plan on hittin as well as 1 mile top speed shootouts seeing how i don't ever plan on runnin more than 600 rwhp.

Hey Phoenix, Fast,

Not sure if you guys would be interested but some of us Supra guys will be meeting for a cruise to Globe (nice curvy roads) on Sunday 11/21/04 at 9 AM. If you guys are interested in attending you are more than welcome. As of right now there are at least 3 other Vipers going (2 GTS's and 1 SRT-10), not counting at least 1 996TT and a few other cool cars.

Plan as of right now is to meet at Saad's gas station (Mobil) at 44th street and Chandler in Ahwatukee at 9 AM, he has race gas there on pumps 23 and 24:)

If you have COOL friends with COOL cars (Vipers, Vettes, 911's, NSX's, Ferraris, etc.) you can invite them to join us. Please don't invite any ricers with POS Civics and general Honduh/Crapura garbage;)

That sounds like a ton of fun with this great cool weather, but unfortunately, my Dad and I will be installing a water softener at my house that day. I know, not so fun, but a project that needs to get done.

There are a couple guys here running 3.73s, without complaint, and 4.10s combined with 19s would be about the same. So it should be fine. As with any gears (I have 3.55s) traction at lower gears is tougher to get when you give the cars gas, and adding more power makes that worse.
Plus you will be shifting much more around town, and your mileage will take a hit.

But no doubt it will feel more eager with the 4.10s.

4.10's in a Viper ought to be interesting. Just can't imagine getting any real traction unless you can control your right foot with the precision of a surgeon. Probably could be fun nonetheless. :)
