If your selling your viper read this!!!

Hi, As you may know im a viper (red RT/10) owner in the UK. I have been investigating setting up a business selling imported vipers in the UK. No one specialises in them over here so it would be a unique.

Im interested to know whether the people on this website who are advertising their car for sale would let it leave the USA - i.e. sell it to me once I have a buyer for it. This would mean I would need pictures and specs etc to advertise it locally.

I would propose to offer you just about your asking price, and I would have someone collect the car and export it from the USA to the UK.

In the spirit of the viper community can you tell me whether you would do this? Is it a good idea? Do you see any pit falls?

As long as the money is green.... I don't see why anyone would have a problem doing this, as long as the cash was in the bank before turning over the Viper. Now for your protection, I would have a qualified Viper inspector review the vehicle before purchasing. I'm sure many dealers could accomidate this request for a small fee.

Will the buyers be willing to pay the huge amount of taxes vs. just getting new? Also, what if they find this site and deal directly with the end-user?

Think about your import taxes.
They are only waived in the EC if :
- you owned the car for at least 12 months; and
- it has been insured for at least 6 months.

If not, your beloved queen will want her fair share of your profits...

I'm European myself and consider ever taking my snake back.
Taxes are a killer though, even if you can avoid the 'import'taxes. Most countries tax based on engine size, which makes a Viper even more expensive than a Ferrari...

I wouldn't have any qualms about selling to a buyer overseas. In fact, you can advertise my car if you'd like!

There are many new and used car dealers in the States that offer European delivery of fine cars such as BMW, Porsche, Aston Martin. Perhaps you can offer American delivery as an option to your clients, whereby they fly over to the city nearest the vehicle and have the opportunity to drive it for a week or two before it is shipped to the UK.

I have exported many cars over to Sweden. I mainly exported older classics that I did not have to pay nearly as much tax on. When I was going to be nailed with a substantial amount of tax I would remove the engine and keep it in the container with the car. I could then send it over as just parts. I was just over there and with the way the dollar is, it is less expensive to buy there. However, that may not be the case with the Viper. I would definately try it to see how it goes.

Is VAT an import tax or a "sales" tax?

Regarding trade laws, I wouldn't be a bit surprised that it would be possible to get some kind of "special status" for trades between club members. I obviously don't know the legalities of trade law but I would think that details are incorporated in trade treaties. It may be easier than you think to get some kind of relief for Viper sales.

In particular, what is the price of a new Viper OS compared to the US? I'm assuming there are Dodge dealerships over there?

If the price is about the same, then D-C has some special status regarding import/export.

Regarding removing engines, you could also get totaled parts such as doors hoods and trunks and put on car and ship over, then ship the good parts.

I've heard that when people ship their car OS, they are doing a "temporary export." But what happens if you "drive" you car over? When you take a $20,000 camera OS you are not TE'ing it. Do different laws apply when you travel with your car?

And finally, arrangements could be made to own the car for 12 months and insure for 6. A deal could be struck and the car kept in storage.

I was considering the Viper Days Euro Mega Tour but when I heard you will be shot if you sell your car over there, I kind of lost interest.

I do have a prurient interest into laundering Vipers OS, however.

VAT (Value added tax)is a sales tax, everything imported new or second hand has this added, the only way to avoid this is to have the sender mark it as a 'gift' and then a certain value applies. It has to be paid to release the car from the docks, there used to be a way of paying less VAT, by getting an invoice made for less than you'd really paid for the goods. A new viper costs £69K about $103K, from your Chrysler dealership, not one Dodge dealership over here !

Here's an example brought $3.5K of bits from Partsrack and paid
$1237.00 for taxes and delivery

I thought about buying from the US direct on the GTS swap a month ago, a much better choice of cars espicially newish used ones than the UK market. I believe the US cars currently aren't any cheaper than UK cars (even though the exchange rate favours us at the moment) by the time you've added your time sourcing your car, containers fee's, import duty (10%) and VAT (17.5%) then the extra costs of SVA approval, unless you can source real bargains across the water it will be hard to make a profit.
Warranty would be a nightmare, I dont thnk Chrysler would regonize it.There was a guy in Coventry about 6 years ago who was bringing Vipers from Florida, he has since stopped. There is definiately a big untapped market which has grown over here for used vipers, an influx is needed as the same cars tend to get passed around. I
currently know of 3 people all looking for GTS's

Many thanks for your comments/thoughts and ideas. Neil is right, adding import duty and shipping fees alone can increase the price by $4k. However, I have worked out on a few for sale on the web site that I could still do it, be competitive and of course make a bit of money. As for warranty, Chrysler wouldnt recognise it so I would sell them with a 3 or 6 month warranty of my own (backed by an insurance company).

The reason why a potential customer would come to me rather than finding the site and doing it themselves is the hassle factor - I would have all documentation/procedures set up etc.

Chuck - I like your idea of them coming to you first, you could also check them over for me before the money is transferred. Ill call you when ive done some more homework.

I need to speak to HM customs etc to see exactly what the costs are, then ill be back in touch. Once im up and working ill create a UK web site, advertise in autoTrader (UKs biggest car sales magazine) and probably put an add on viperclub.org.
