I'm torn about possibly selling my car

Hey guys. I'm at a crossroad. I went into a local dealership and saw the Gen V and loved it. Great lines. What a great looking car. However, I don't know if I'm ready to sell my car yet. It's going to be tough going to the Gen V with "only" 640hp when you have been driving a 1000hp, 540ci twin turbo Gen 3. I would love to have both but that's not remotely possible. lol. Any thoughts?

Do you actually use the 1000hp for events like drag racing, mile runs, ect? Your viper is nice and it would be a hard choice for me as well.

No just for running around and having fun. I used to race 600cc and 1000cc motorcycles professionally so I LOVE that feeling of being crushed back in the seat by a huge horsepower car.:D

What will make it easier is to go out and rent a Prius and drive it for 2 full months daily. Just the Prius! At that point, you can pull the trigger on a new GEN V then go out and use that GEN V forever more. You will be so amazed at the insane power the GEN V will feel like it has over the Prius. Seriously when I get home from a work trip and I was stuck in a crappy rental car with no power, you forget just how powerful your powerful vehicles are. This may be the only way to truly "wean" yourself off the 1,000 HP. The other reality is there are but a small handful of 1,000+ factory cars so your options are pretty limited. I think after a couple of months in the new GEN V, you will forget about the old car, even if it is down on the power. Just use it more in other situations where you could not use the 1,000 HP car fully.

I know exactly what you mean( Loved the Gen V, and have a TT GTS). I will tell you that once the "new car" feeling goes away, and you get pulled on the highway by a GTR, Porche Turbo, or vette, you will regret having to sell your beast to get the Gen V.
I'm sure you got a lot of $$ into your car which you will not get back, but its $$ value is is stable now and will remain stable.

What will a Gen V 3 years from now be worth? Specially after GM releases the new Z06 and/or ZR1?

You will just have to be content to cruise and listen to your 18 speaker stereo. And when you see the competition in your rear view mirror waving thru traffic hunting you... Get off the hwy!

If you're the type that enjoys a unique, customized vehicle (your current Viper), I don't think you'll get quite the same satisfaction from a new car that anyone can go out and buy if they have the funds. It's not just about HP-- it's about doing the car hobby a little bit differently than everyone else. Among car guys a well-built modified engine commands respect while a high-dollar bone stocker is just OK/nice cash flow, dude. To me the Gen V is nice, but once you've seen a few, not as interesting as something like a 1000 HP street serpent.

You will take a beating on selling or trading your car. If its just a weekend toy, i would keep it. And 1000 hp and 640hp are two totally different cars. Your crazy to give it up, and you will be banging your head wondering why you did it when the newness goes away, which does not take long.
Then again if money is no object, go for it.

Keep what you have, it is hard to go backwards in power and/or acceleration, especially since you are used to bikes that have killer power/weight ratios.

I'm leaning that way. I drove it into work today and I get the biggest sh*t eating grin whenever I lay into it and feel the rush and hear the turbos spooling up. :D

First a twin turbo 1000hp Viper is everyone's dream. The Gen V is nice, but its just another Viper that anyone can buy. 640hp is not a lot. 1000hp seems sufficient! Don't sell. After the leather and LCD screen wear off, you'll be left disappointed everytime you press the pedal.

Daytona Supersport? Even Ben Spies was in that one on 2006! What's your race number, I can look it up...

I thought the same thing for a few minutes but I can't give up the 1000hp for a factory car... Way to much fun but I would rather take the money and buy a 2nd Viper that is closer to stock so you have the best of both worlds.

I was number 115. I had a terrible race. The shifter came off the transmission shaft 20 laps into the race. Figures that was the only part not safety wired. I've NEVER had something like that happen in my 20 years of racing. Just goes to show you expect anything in racing. lol

Well who would safety wire a shift lever? That *****. I hate when I see something like that, considering how much effort it took just to get there and to qualify. What a waste.

Yup, exited the chicane went up onto the banking and went to shift and the lever was just dangling. Then to make matters worse, my pit crew had it too high when they put it back on so I had to pit twice to get it in the right position.

Assuming race shift, trying to lift your foot that high to upshift would be irritating! That's all it takes, one little issue and its a struggle. I just go to track days, so hats off to you for making that commitment to racing! That's whole nother level and world there. Especially the 600s, full of 'don't care if I die' kids.

I think you will regret the change sooner or later. You are comparing a stock car to a built/modified car that you are going to lose a fortune on in markets like these. You will lose less money just upgrading your current car even more, or if possible, keep your current car and add a new one in a year rather than brand new. Consider the fact that the depreciation of that new car in < 3 years will probably equal what you will even get for your current car! Is three years worth losing a 1000HP Viper?


If you are looking for new tech, it CAN be added. If you are looking for style changes, suspension changes, power changes, hell... whole drivetrain changes, it CAN be done.

Latest and greatest is always nice!
After you have it and it wears out, is not big deal anymore.
I went a thru That same cycle with vettes, and after owning d newer model after a few months, it is just not the same.

The new viper is nice, and smells great inside. Has all the gadgets which I love.
However, when I get into my TT is like Clark Kent putting on d Superman suite. I know I will not get that feeling on d new viper.

Both great cars, very different 'attitudes.' One new owner here says the Gen V is the closest thing to a race car in street clothing he has ever driven (but I don't know if he's drive a Gen IV ACR), so you might like that. At a very minimum, take the new Viper for a test drive. Better yet, make up your mind to drive it, go home and drive the TT and then do another test drive before making a decision. Also, if money for your TT is the issue, you can always list it for sale and see what kind of offers you get before deciding.

Another View.

In my 03 Vert with Paxton I was putting down around 800 hp. It was fast, fun, exciting and more than a little scary.

First 3 gears just spun the stock tires, but a hooked up pull in 3rd gear felt like the hand of God was pushing us along.

But truth be told, when pushed hard, things began to break and the service cost and trips to the repair shop began to become less acceptable. Was spending more time tinkering than driving.

I traded up to an 09 Coupe with the new engine, and while it had more high rev pull than the N/A engine it never had that same rush as the supercharger.

On the other hand, it has been dead reliable, needs far less service, and still gives a pretty good kick in the butt with the stock 600 hp.

The real benefit is the dead solid feeling of the car once again being in balance. The tires do not feel over cooked, the brakes are up to the task and the drive line feels like it will hold together for many many thousands of miles.

I can again venture onto the race track. The car is more consistent and planted. With boost, every corner was a different corner.

While I miss the rush, this is perhaps the better car.

The new Gen V with all it's enhancements and even more N/A power and full warranty might be pretty appealing.

Just a stock motor with stock Paxton.

I had a chance to drive a +1,000 hp Gen II GTS, and indeed it was a different animal, but it too kept breaking things, and driving it hard also attracted police attention. Few places I could let it rip. Even had the local Marine airforce base ask me to knock it off in their vicinity : <(

It was a total blast, but the owner constantly was fussing with computer, fuel mixture, boost amounts etc. Rarely was able to just rip around without constantly attending to something.
