Impact on RT Factory Spoiler on Value

Just posing another question to the members..

Does adding the factory rear spoiler add to the value of the car (generally) or does it actually decrease its value? It is one of the upgrades I am planning to do and just wanted to get everyone's opinion on it.

Thinking from a purist standpoint, would it limit the market for resale or actually make the car more desireable?

I think it finishs out the look of the RT. As for "adding value", maybe as much as the cost of the wing, but don't expect your car to all of a sudden become worth $10K more.

The addition of the spoiler makes the car look a million times better. Just add it...it is factory supplied so it's OEM....and will not decrease the value of the vehicle.

Might be OEM but it didn't come that way. A purist will like the car as delivered.

Some people (like me) don't like spoilers on RT/10s. Factory or not. To me, it wouldn't add anything to the value and if 2 cars are for sale, with everything the same except one has a wing and one doesn't, I'm buying the wingless RT/10. This is, ofcourse, just my overpriced $0.02

I wouldn't have an RT/10 unless it has a spoiler on it. Doesn't look right without one IMO.

Tator has the factory RT/10 spoiler so I installed one on mine. It makes the rear look much better and aggressive. I doubt it adds any value but I don't care. Be warned...installing this spoiler requires drilling holes through the top of the trunk deck lid. So consider it a permanent install.

If you're a purist don't install the spoiler.

As for market resale...who cares? So long as you like it and it makes you happy then install it...otherwise don't.

Driving the car will have 50 times the influence on value than a rear deck spoiler. So either garage the car for 20 years or put it on and drive it.

Resale value .... sheesh.

My friend ha a spoiler that you drill the holes inside the lid on the edge but it looks exactly like the more common RT Spoiler. The guy he bought the car from bought it but never installed it and sold it to him for an additional $400. We lined it up on the car and I didn't like it at all. The Europeans and Brits make fun of us for doing this stuff. The RT/10 look awesome just the way it is. If you're trying to get more of a GTS look it just doesn't turn out that way at all. The low sleek look from behind is one of the RT's best angles IMO but people have different tastes.

n terms of value not much difference but it could reduce the number of potential buyers like putting a built in pool in your yard because it's easy to add one but nobody wants to have to remove one because you don't know what lurks underneath. There are better ways to spend money on the car IMO.

Personally I think an RT is dangerous at 150+ mph without one. And you can feel the effects of the spoiler at 100.

The picture that V10enomous is one of the key reasons I bought the RT. That really low, chopped off look, makes it look really mean. But, that said, I do also like the look of the factory spoiler, especially after following Chuck up to the Saratoga show a few weeks ago.

Anyway, I would not do it for resale value, but was curious whether most members think it would hurt. The Viper is a car that many personalize to what they want theirs to look like.

I was only looking for opinions and, in the end, will examine the pics sent and decide.

When I was looking to buy an RT/10 I was not interested in cars with spoilers.

Anything you do to change a viper from its stock condition, you have to find a buyer that wants that change. That will reduce the number of interested parties.We have two stock vipers in our family.

Interesting debate! Seems to be another polarzing question, and one which is more a function of taste.

I do not race, nor do I drive the car over 100 very often. So, the performance of the RT at 150 is not a reason why I would want a spoiler. For me, it is just a matter of making improvements to the car be it performance or looks. I asked the question because I was curious if adding the spoiler would, in fact, lower the value of the car.

I could argue it both ways and just wanted to hear what others thought to give me additional perspective.

Here's another picture... I'll bet when these were still cheap some people thought about adding a spoiler... If you do decide to put one on then just go with the one that you drill the inner sides of the trunk lid and it shouldn't be as big a deal. You can actually put it on and remove it pretty easily...

I've been around collectible Mopars for well over 20 years. Modifications that are easily reversed...like wheels or exhaust....are no big deal. Modifications like spoilers, color change, custom interior, etc...do impact value. Most folks want the car stock and it's tougher to find a buyer that likes what you did.

Personally, a spoiler on an RT isn't my thing and it would take that car off my shopping list as there are just too many stock cars available.

That said, it's your car...make it the way you want it...forget the future value, just enjoy the car.

Interesting comparison, the Cobra. Though the lines are different - far more rounded - I can see how collectors might reject it because of adding the spoiler. I would have said "that isn't how the car was built, why was that added?"

Thanks Plumb, I'm now trying to recall how many I've actually seen with one, but can't recall other than Chuck and I think Tony has one.

Again, I don't race and not planning to sell the car, so this is was just to get others' perspective. In the end, it is going to be a function of whether I like the look of the car better with it than without it.

The only reason to install one!!! If you drive an RT over 135 frequently, YOU NEED ONE!

My 2 cheap cents...

IF.... you have a completely original (and I mean COMPLETELY) 1992 RT/10 with less than 2000 miles, I would never drill holes on it or add spoilers.
IF.... Your only intension is to sell the car at B.Jackson auction in year 2035 and get top dollar, dont do it. Meanwhile, between now and 2035, you cannot drive the car either.
IF... it is one of the very rare animals out there, such as 96 shelby-Viper etc, then the answer is no.


On the other hand if you have one of the red 1993's with more than 5K miles, start drilling holes, you worry too much about other peoples wallets and opinions. The original design without the rear spoiler looks like a naked potato. It needs bacon, salt and pepper! Here's a loades spud for Ya!

I'm not big on the spoiler either, but it is all a matter of opinion.

On another note, I never understood why people buy cars for resale, if you're looking to make money, buy stocks.
