Intake Manifold Removal - Gen I

can anyone give me some advice as to whether or not this is a pretty doable job?

basically, there is some debris, right in the middle of my engine, just underneath the intake manifold, and i cannot get it out, and need to remove it to reach in and clean it all out.

is it as easy as just removing the bolts slowly and disassambling it?

Ummmm, try some compressed air. Just blow it out.

i just did a bit of a closer look...believe it or not...it is a slice of bread...and there is about 8 pieces or so as it was broken apart...god knows how it got in there...im not sure if the compressed air would work...if i could somehow fit a vacuum or something...i took a pic although its hard to see it

get one of those thin syringe, picker, upper things...they work pretty good for this stuff.

or flood it with water, let it sit and soften, then blow it out or more water to push it out

If the debris is dry leaves, use a small wooden dowel, break them up, then vacuum them away.

Maybe put a mouse in there, wait till it eats the bread, and then use compressed air to scare the crap out of it and have it run away?

There are very small adapters for a shop vac. You can buy one at Sears with a bunch of attachments. Do a Rodent check in the garage. It's nasty business once they are in there.

If you have food in there you have a pest problem! As others have said check your garage, also check your wiring to make sure nothing has been nibbled. I remember a while back reading about a car which had mice nesting in the hood lining! I would get some traps and put some poison down.

Im sure if you took the car down to a local auto shop which had an air line they would blow the stuff out for you, try your local tire shop

Yup, I'm thinking you have mice!!! See if you can con the little fellow into removing the bread for you. Seriously though, use a long tool to break up the bread, then hit it with compressed air and or a vacuum. And get a cat!

I'm sorry but I busted out laughing when you said "believe it or not it is a piece of bread", then the mice thing hit me when others said it. Guess at first I was trying to picture the orginal owner eating a sandwich or something over the engine and sloppily dropping it and saying "eh, dat's ok".

hey thanks for all the ideas...yeah i laughed my ass off as well when i saw thats its bread...i thought of 100 ways it got in there...one of my windshield washer lines were chewed right at the wiper...so i set a trap out 2 weeks ago...the first night i could one small mouse...since then, i have not caught any, so i a wondering if there was just the one...i will check for that shop vac attachment this weekend and hopefully get that out.

If it's mice you will have droppings in the intake also. If it's any rodent you will have droppings!

Put moth balls on your engine before you go to bed

You can make your own shop vac attachment with a cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels. Duct tape the tube to the end of the nozzle if it won't fit over it, then shape the tube to fit into the manifold.
