Has anyone had trouble and perhaps have info on resolution for an intermittent blower control problem...

Now that my snake is slither'in with recent mods and repainted side sills and new tires, I don't need this!!!!

Problem, most of the time, if I try to direct heat to the floor or defrost or combo, all I get is cold air out the panel vents...I checked that the control valve in the heater hose is moving when I move the temp knob...

Then after I parked to get a burritto, I came back and the thing was working, could get heat to floor only, or defrost, or combo...Drove home less than 10 minutes, and noticed that the heat was now only coming out defrost only...No matter where I position the knob (even to the left of off, meaning to panel-did nto try all the way to AC) I get heat to the defrost only...In this last test I forgot to try cold, but no matter where I position the blower/heater control, I only get air blowing out the defrost (base of windshield)...

But who knows, next time i start her up, it might work fine...Is this not on a cable like the heat is???

Please help, California cruis'in does need a little heat early morning or evening when temp is ~ 60 degrees

thanks

Your explanation describes your heater control circuit works properly! Your car was designed to blow heat from the defrost vents only.

Let me know if you have any other Q's,

Doug, thanks! However, let me be more clear...

Last night, for example, I have the temp know all the way to the right, fan speed on high, and I turned the blower control to defrost, and I would get cool air blowing out of the main dash panel vents...

After I had parked the car for 10 minutes, got back in and then I could get heat out of the floor only, defrost only, or floor/defrost combo...

By the time I got home (10 minutes), again with temp on high, fan speed on high, if I turned the blower control to say the left of off, to panel vent, I would get heat blowing to defrost only...If I moved blower control over to floor only, I get heat to defrost only...Thats the condition I left it in last night...

Who knows what might happen next time I start her up!!

I don't want to try to remove the dash panel just to investigate, does anyone have any thoughts?

Much appreciated!

Sounds like maybe a vacume supply problem. Check the vacume hose at the right rear of the intake manifold. look for leaks or pinchs.be sure and check all the hoses and linkage at right side of heater box under the hood.not much is actually happening in the dash other than the control panel. The defrost is the default mode. also as duog said you will not get heat in any mode poistion left of center.

Tomer,
According to your description you could have a vacuum line problem. Check the lines going into the evaporator case under the hood. If all looks well, remove the control head (remove bezel which has no fasteners then remove the 2 screws holding the control head in. The back of the control head will have a connector with the vacuum lines. Check to ensure they are properly conneced.

Your A/C system has the defrost as a default. Which means in the event of lost vacuum you will get air through the defrost only. This seems to be your condition.

When working properly, you are able to get heat through the floor and/or defrost only. Panel air should be A/C or ambient air (which might be slightly warm from the engine compartment).

Also, you have full heat or full cold only. There is no temperature modulation, only air. If you aren't getting hot air when the temp is turned to the 'hot' side of the temp range, you might have air in the heater core (assuming your water valve is working properly).

Thanks for the info!! Preliminary visual checks show that the main vaccum supply from the rear of the right intake manifold has been resting on the valve cover, and some of the plastic is melted off of the little hose and onto the valve cover...

I don't know how to confirm that this point is a vaccum leak, but I might try (if I can get the hose off the intake manifold) to clean the hose and put some shrink wrap over this part, shrink it, then tie the vaccum hose back off the valve cover, even if I tie it to the spark plug wire loom...

I should know Saturday if this is the source of the leak!
