I have been working on a fire extinguisher mount to be used in the center console in place of the glove box door for my own GTS. I am considering making these for resale and I wanted to put this out and see if there was any interest from you guys in this product. Here are some details:

<ul type="square">
[*]Simple installation (no holes to drill/no cutting) using stubby phillips head screwdriver and 3/8" wrench or socket.
[*]2 piece design that is actually bolted to car for solid mounting.
[*]Black vinyl to match center console.
[/list]

This can be used in place of the glove box door full time or interchanged very quickly (less than 10 min) for those that only want it for track events and want to keep their storage space. I have only tested the fit in a GTS. It should fit in a Gen II RT/10 also but I would need to test it in one to see if there are any design changes that might need to be made because of the sub. I would also consider building these for Gen I RT/10's to be used in place of one of the subs (or grill covers). I'd have to spend some time looking at a Gen I car but I can probably come up with something. I am estimating a price of less than $50 (not including extinguisher). Here are a couple of pics of the mount in my car. I'll try and get more pics if there is interest. Questions? Comments?

Good to see some other ideas...but I PERSONALLY would NOT want one mounted there...cockpit is "close" enough already...AND would NOT want to have arm bang into bottle during shifting or during accident...just MY 0.02 worth.

Nice alternative. Does anyone know where to get the brakets for the seat mounting type? Also, where to get the chrome extinguisher?

Andymo,

If there was some quick release bracket built so that you could snap it in and out in seconds. With the bracket in black, permanently mounted with no interference with the glovebox door. Then you would have a winning product.

But unless you use you Viper soley for racing, the extinguisher would be in the way, and distract from the nice looks of the cockpit.

Dean -

Thanks for the idea. I had thought about something along those lines at one point in my R&amp;D. In order to maintain a solid mounting point, the bracket holds both the extinguisher and vinly cover in place and is mounted in existing holes to avoid any modification to the interior (a point I THOUGHT would be more important). The extinguisher mount is also attached to the vinyl cover. The change over involves removing 5 screws (2 from the latch mount and 3 from the glove box) and reinstalling 2 screws for the bracket, then putting the cover on and tightening 2 lock nuts. In reality, it probably takes much less than 10 minutes and I know that I can do it in less than 2 minutes. My main goal was to make it solid in the car.

Steve -

I understand your point but I looked at it from a different viewpoint. I did not like not being able to reach my floor mounted extinguisher while being strapped into my 5 pt harness. This was the whole reason behind this design. I ran this mount at several open track events last year and never even came close to hitting it while shifting or otherwise. I left it in the car for a few months and, other than losing the small storage area, never noticed any inconvenience with it in there. I am only 5'9" so taller/longer armed people might have more of an issue with it but it seems as if the seat bolster would keep your arm from going back that far, i dunno?

If you have a fire and have to spend more time (seconds feel like days) in the car to get to the extinguisher it isn't likley going to get used.

Would you stick your head back in the passenger side with the car on fire, undo two straps (possibly with limited vision)? I don't think I would. If I would it would be only for a very minor fire.

Anyone racing seriously should consider a system that allows a remote actuator. Most have two actuators - one where the driver can easily get to it and one outside (or reachable from outside) the car.

I just purchased (yesterday) a firefighter system with two nozzles for $169 complete. It's manufacturered by S.P.A. design, Ltd. This is better because you can have one nozzle inside the car and one under the hood. A three nozzle system can cover the gas tank or fuel cell as well.

This is a foam system which seems to be the way racers are going.

For occassional track use the center mount makes a LOT of sense in my opinion...

You talking about the Clubman Fire System sold by SPATechnique.com? Just curious since I am a sponge where all Viper-related things are concerned.

Clubman System: This system is an ideal entry-level system.
The 2.25 ltr bottle (AFFF) is accompanied by a mounting base and straps, 12' of tubing, 2 nozzles, 1 t-piece, 1 6' pull cable and 1 12' pull cable.

At the time of this writing, I don't exactly understand how this works, but I'm reading and learning. Fascinating and functional stuff.
