Is it necessary to keep the same diameter on a H pipe?

The H pipe balances pressure, doesn't really act as a primary path for exhaust to flow.

Is there any reason why it couldn't be something like 1" in a 2.5" exhaust if it was placed before cat?

I doubt a 1" pipe would be any significant detriment from a 2.5". But I'd like to see how you're going to route it before the cat.

Now that would be a trick!! I'd like to hear what you find out on the diameter, as I have been thinking about doing this as well.

Right, the H pipe is not the primary path for the exhaust flow, it is an exhuast pressure equalizer. So it only needs enough flow to balance the pressures between both sides. Now what exactly that size is, I cant answer. But I think max flow differential would be 50% given 1 more cyclinder is firing on 1 side vs the other, so max required probably is 50% of the current pipe size. 2.5 , max needed prob 1.25 inch..

We ran a 1.5" crossover (H) pipe on a 37 Frod Streetrod with a 6 speed. It completely eliminated the exhaust drone!
Packaging issues aren't only limited to Vipers, you know.
Remember: we are trying to cancel sound waves, not airflow.

well, a H pipe is used to do more then just cancel sound waves, its being used to equalise exhaust flow.

I just want to be clear, the advantage is far greater then just a better sounding exhaust system.
