Is it OK to drive your Viper to a wake / funeral ?

A good friend recently passed. He was not a car enthusiast. I was considering driving my Viper to the wake / funeral but I didn't know if it would be proper. Just driving this car makes a bad day better no matter what I'm doing or where I'm going, but I'm not sure if I'm over stepping some boundry here or not. Would this be proper ettique ? Any help or suggestions ?

I would, if theres any car that can make you feel better on a bad day, it's a Viper.

I have for that exact same reason-it makes me feel better. It also made me realize how lucky I was to have my dream car and get to enjoy it.

Many people save and save for their dreams only to find out when they can actually afford them they are to old to enjoy them. Screw the extra money for retirement-I want the memories!!

This is an interesting question! IMHO, considering that you mentioned that he was not a car guy.... and the fact that you're thinking about it ..... I would think that modesty should prevail at this time of sorrow.

I wouldn't drive it either in that situation. The car is a little too flashy for a time of mourning and attracts attention. I had a good friend of mine die a month ago and didn't even consider it because of this (and its pretty loud). However, I do take my Viper whenever I go visit his grave site.

Back in 1999 drove my '96GTS to the funeral of a friend I'd known since we were teens (40years). Some of his co-workers in the back of the parking lot were talking cars with me when I first got there.

Later I was near the front of the procession, funeral flag attached to the window and all.


Some people recognized a Viper parked in line as they walked by it into the funeral home, but for the most part it went fairly unnoticed. There's always an assortment of cars at a funeral ..


My car wasn't overly loud, but if it was I'd have waited to fire it up when the cars in front of me in the parking lot moved a bit, kept it in a higher gear than normal, and shut it off asap.

On this type of occasion it just doesn't seem appropriate, however only you know how family and friends would react...If you have to ask the question you probably should leave the Viper in the garage.

Oddly enough, this came up twice for me in the past few months. One of my partner's lost his father and I went to the funeral. Parked basically outside and hoofed it for the exact reasons you are asking this question. Fortunately, the woman working the front gate saw me and gave me a lift...turned out to be really far. However, the service was going on already and others had driven right up to the burial area. Definitely would have been bad to pull up in the Viper at that moment. Yesterday, I went to a wake of a former girlfriend's father. Parking outside the building and going in was no problem. These cars do attract a lot of attention. Sometimes that's good, sometimes not, and sometimes caution is the best answer when in doubt. Glad you asked this question, as I had the same thoughts.

I have driven Vipers , Prowlers and Corvettes and various MOPAR Muscle to funerals and showings, mainly because thats all I own is sports cars/muscle cars.....I have never noticed any undue attention focused on the cars.....many don't even notice....just be respectful, civil and don't worry about it.......

on another note...several years ago a car buddy of mine passed away and we had the biggest cruise in and parade of hot rods/muscle cars you could imagine....the funeral procession had nearly 50 hot cars, many with uncapped headers just for Bill....we took over 3 lanes of a 4 lane highway and ran 3 abreast and nearly 20 rows deep, just hot rods and customs('32 coupes, chopped Mercs, HEMICUDAS and Vipers)....looked like the Daytona 500 pace lap.....I am sure he was having one last chuckle....

I had the same situation about a month ago. Only it was my elderly aunt who died(actually a blessing as she had become very ill for a long time).
I was debating on whether taking the Viper to the funeral....it was an absolutely beautiful day too, very tempting, but decided against it. Even though it is "just" a car something didn't feel right about driving it there. Most of the people attending were so old that they would have had no clue what a Viper was but I felt better not having it there.
I agree with NY VIPER that if you had to ask the question you should leave it in the garage. You must not feel 100% right about driving it there.
Go ahead and take a spin in it afterwards and you will feel much better, that is what I did.

Odd, the poll is leaning against it, and that's okay. But showing up in a big Hummer, Corvette, Mercedes etc is somehow better?

...It's not the same as renting one for a high school reunion. It's your car. I've seen motorcycles at a funeral home.


Leave it home and take note of what other makes show up. I'm sure everyone's not showing up in the dullest car they own.

No offense, but you don't own a Viper, do you? The Viper draws crowds of people at every turn. I have owned Vettes, and I would not hesitate to bring a 1974 or newer one to a funeral. It draws very little attention, as you see so many on the road. Same goes for Mercedes and the Hummer H2.

I would not bring a Viper or a Hummer H1 to a funeral. These cars create to much stir and attention. Some other cars that come to mind would be a Lambo or Ferrari. The Viper is not the only car that creates a stir, but it is one in a small group of cars. And it's the car we own, hence the question.
