Do you notice that the paint in bright sun light looks a little blotchy? My car has never been wrecked or repainted...is this common?

I had to repaint my roof since an a$$hole tried to break up my Viper (being at the dealer for service!) at the edge between the roof/passenger window. The paint shop has done a really good job and you cannot see that the roof is repainted, but the guy from the paint shop said: that´s a really bad original silver paint...

I think Silver can be pretty sensitive to sunlight.

I had a Silver VW Jetta in Houston. It was parked in the same spot everyday. As anyone familiar with Houston knows the sun gets pretty hot and intense in the summer. One side of the car faded (the side facing the setting sun) much more quickly than the other side. Maybe it was just that car.

My Silver GTS has lived in Amarillo all its life and the three year old paint job (original factory) still looks fine.

I've had nearly all of mine repainted for various reasons, including puting clear over the custom colored stripes.
HOWEVER, I rode in a shuttle bus at VOI 6 (St. Louis) with 2 of the engineers with TEAMVIPER. One had a prime responsibility of paint, and we were all 'teasing' them with questions regarding the upcoming models. Of course, they were closed mouthed about inovations, BUT they both said, as loudly as possible, "we will never paint another Viper Silver" if they could help it. Claimed it was/is the hardest color from a manufacturer standpoint. Nearly impossible to match and get to look great and satisfy owners. If I'm not mistaken, this color is most likely to 'burn' on the sills adjacent the cats. SO, we may have the only ones to ever exist!!!

Get some stripes on that bad boy Adam. Mike's silver/blue ACR looks great. Somebody had grey stripes that looked great too.

I'm on my fourth Viper and at present own a 2000 steel gray w/ stripes. I've noticed the doors seem to have a sort of rippling efect in the finish. I would say that the prep work to the surface is not done the way it should be. I see this a lot in corvettes but not as bad as it used to be. the hood on Vipers seems to come out best.I also can see the fiberglass webbing in some spots on the hood. Over all its OK. But I can say this much I would never accept the heavy rippling/orange peel that is in the doors if I were having paint work done. A little bit of waviness is Ok on glass bodied cars. It cant be avoided.Frost is out of the question. The dappling efect I have seen does show up more on silver or pewter than others. Paint must be constanly stirred while spraying car.And spray pattern and distance maintaned. Good painters can do this.

No noticeable blotchiness on mine. However, the front fascia sometimes looks slightly lighter in colour in bright sun, but I think this is more due to a difference in reflection angle than a defect in the paint.

Cheers,

I too have seen some minor imperfections on the paint of my car( orange peel, darker and lighter shade between body panels and those famous yellow side sills) .
But after looking at diamonds all day you will always fine a imperfection the more you look , so take it for what it is worth and at 150mph who could really tell about the paint anyway.

Silver is extremely trick to apply, for that reason some manufacturers avoid it completely!
In DCX silver is known to "mottle", on other non Viper lines, although Viper panels are outsourced (is ASC that shoots them?).
It's hard to avoid and even harder to fix short of a complete sand, a good test to see if you've got it is to hit a well lit parking lot/ car wash bay at night, that is illuminated with florescent lighting, if you can pass that test for mottle, your good in any other condition!!!
Silver does like gorgeous on a Viper, aggressive and classy at the same time, and easier to keep clean to boot!!!!
happy motoring.....

I ended up having my entire car taken down to the fiberglass and repainted because of problems with the silver - bubbling, yellowing, etc. Fortunately for me, almost everything I wanted done was done under warranty. The few other Silver Vipers that I've seen have all had inconsistencies in the paint - some noticable and some not.

Dodge had more problems with paint consistency on the silver cars than any other in the line's history. Lots of orders were pushed into the next model year because of it. Silver/blue stripes was supposed to be one year only. I think they went thru 2 paint suppliers before settling on a 3rd - WELL AFTER production had started. The front and rear fascias are the most problematic.
