Hi,
My car did not come with an airbox, just smooth tubes and cone filters. I am looking at the k&n cold air intake but I only see it listed for 95-98 vipers. I have a 99 GTS Acr and would like to know if there is any reason it might not fit on a 99. I have emailed the seller but haven't recieved any response. The K &N website doesn't show any cold air intake for a 99- only 95-98.
Thanks
Gary

How could it not come with airbox? I've heard negative things about those.

The airbox will fit. It does require a little trimming to make it fit better/correctly. The box is a great idea, but the s-shape tubes restrict airflow. If you modify the hoses,ie. use larger hoses and or combination of metal tubes you will see a definite improvement in hp/torque especially at speed when the motor is hot.

I just got a airbox, smooth tubes and filters from JMB Performance, which is a performance shop here in St. Louis. They just started making these recently and I got one of the first ones. The quality is superb and the smooth tubes are straighter than the ones on the K&N. The airbox and the smooth tubes are powdercoated and you can even have them weld in bungs on the tubes for a power adder later :) They do a few different colors on both the airbox and the smooth tubes. My airbox is powdercoated wrinkle red which closely matches the rough red texture on the engine, and my smooth tubes are powdercoated reflective chrome which is a shiny silver. The looks and quality is definitely better than the K&N and I think its even a little cheaper. I'll try to post up some pictures tonight.

Warfang: I have 70mm throttle bodies and adapted them to fit. It required enlarging the holes in the rubber doughnuts for the air-box. I also used a combination of 3" smooth tubes and metatubes to make it fit. Yes, it was a little work, but it does seem to help. It's important to keep the hot air from the motor away from the intake. Elite has a similiar idear but much more expensive.

Synfull: You are probably losing hp with that setup when the motor gets hot. You are sucking hot air from the motor. A modified stock set-up would probably be better.

I have the K&N filter box on my 98, I am happy with it, just dyno'd the car and it was 427hp and 473 torque. I didnt do a baseline, but doesnt look like lost any either.

Why would you **** hotair from the motor? it has a rubber seal that seals it to the top of the hood so youre not getting the air from the engine bay, and the plastic wont trasnfer as much heat as a metal smooth tube would.

I have the K&N on my 95 viper, it made ok power with it, 470 RWHP and 550 RWTQ on motor only.

I don't see why it would not fit a 99 GTS, it looks like it would fit my 2001 as well.

Overall I like the look of the Intake but think the price is to high for what you get. I think it would be a great unit for closer to around $180 or $200. If I had to spend $400 for it I would just call Paul Scharf and get a used OEM intake system for it cheap and put the K&N's and tubes on. The intake would be better with polished aluminum hard tubes.

As for the hot air, I don't think it is going to **** a lot of hot air, it does have a good seal around it and the filters are shielded from the hot engine air. Probably would work better on a Gen II with a NACA duct.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all your help. The K&N setup is on ebay for 317.00 with the filters. I just wanted to make sure it would fit- like I said they only list it for up to a 98. I read somewhere that some modding needs to be done to get it to fit a 99 which i don't mind as long as it will work.
ACCELR8- your engine looks great!
LETHAL GTS- I just hate putting anything stock back on my car. I feel like I am going backwards even though it may work the best.

I see your point but would you rather go backwards on the HP level or aesthetic level?

I think the K&N looks more custom, plus if I bought the stock airbox I would want to modify it to cut out the rain shield. I would think that the K&N setup will work as well or better that the stock airbox, so I don't see it as going backwards on either level- except monetery.
Thanks
Gary

When I stated that you would **** hot air from the motor, I was refering to the picture of SYNFUL car. I didn't mean to confuse anyone about the K@N airbox. However, the S-tubes supplied with the K@N air box are smaller than the original tubes. This is why they need to be upgraded to get the full benefit of the K@N airbox especially if use have larger throttle bodies. Hope this helps.

Here's a couple of pics of my JMB Performance airbox. As I mentioned in my post above, they have a few different colors to choose from for the powdercoating on the airbox and the smooth tubes. The color on my airbox is called wrinkle red and the smooth tubes are reflective chrome. There are places for all the stock hoses to plug into and extra bungs welded in for nitrous.

There are probably some guys on this board who have their stock air box "laying around", and would sell it to you for very little over the shipping cost. Throw some K&N's or Accel Blues in it and get on down the road for under $100 (+tubes) instead of the cost of the box pictured above.

IMO, the stock box assy w/ smooth tubes is a clean looking install.

Where can you get those? Any idea if those are better than the k&n's?

The filters? Those are K&Ns

Not the filters... where'd you get the airbox?

See my first post above... the company is called JMB Performance. The kit came with everything I needed; couplers, clamps, smooth tubes, airbox, filters and harware to mount it. There were no modifications necessary to mount it either, just bolts up exactly where the stock airbox did and it was easy to install. As you can see by the pictures there's a place for the stock hoses to go on the smooth tubes and there's a hole in the airbox that the temp sensor plugs into. They also powdercoated the airbox and the smooth tubes the colors I wanted. It is really good quality and they had great customer service (they were willing to answer all my stupid questions :) ).
