I have a new SRT/10 and i see where K&N offers a filter set-up for $299.00 15 HP gain! Is this true? Whats wrong with Stock Filters? If K&N's are so good why wouldn't Dodge use them. Just thinking out loud. Any comments would be appreciated, is K&N overrated?

Do a search on filters. Chris aka Y2K3SRT did a great comparison write up on them.

The Search key is a wonderful thing. --who's the author of this one again?

By the way, if anyone wants a pair of the K&N pod filters which fit on the stock SRT intake, I have a pair sitting around for which I no longer have a use. $20+shipping and they're yours.

Put on my K&N filter assembly this weekend. Easy job, drilled the air fittings
as recommended. Thanks guys ! No noise and a noticable throttle response
increase. The upshift indicator worked for the first ride but went away after
that (I won't miss it anyway) 3.55 Gears & Corsa exhaust install tommorrow.
RonB stick by the phone, I feel the need for more speed.

I have had my K&N set-up on my car for a few weeks now. Went in today to get the car dynoed. Horsepower was DOWN 18, and torque was DOWN 33 compared to the stock airbox and filters. The graph was not smooth at all, and was all spiky. Something definitely not right.

So, remembering the threads on blockages and drilling, we pulled the K&N filter housing to check the openings. The crank case vent hose filter was completely blocked. There was a hole maybe as big as a pin, the rest was obstructed by a big gob of plastic. There was no way that any amount of air was getting through that vent hole. Out came the drill, and we opened the hole up. Then it went back on the dyno.

Numbers were now much better. Horsepower was now 7 ABOVE stock baseline (to 440) and torque was at stock baseline (476). This was after five pulls with a very very hot engine on a very hot day, so perhaps the numbers may have been a little better if I'd waited and cooled things off a bit.

The moral of the story is, make sure to drill your K&N filter housings. I hope that they will pay a little better attention to quality control from here on out. Seems a bit shoddy for a company with such a good reputation.

Sounds as though there is more than one quality control issue at present with this system...remembering the observed gap that required tape to seal.

Anyone know if K&N working to fix these relatively minor problems?

Seadouz, did you disconnect your battery before you installed the K&N Filter Kit?
This is really weird guys. I have half a dozen e-mails from people who lost the Skip Shift after the K&N install.
Again, I DONT miss it, but I am sure curious to find out what the cause is and is there anything else affected that we dont know about?
K&N are you listening?

Installed my K&Ns last weekend. Did not have to drill out any holes. I measured the K&N unit as compared to the factory unit, the openings were the same size.
I did not disconnect the battery before starting the installation.
Upshift light still works. No whistle sound at all but noticeably more air flow noise.

No, I didn't disconnect the battery. My shift up indicator worked for the first
5 miles of driving but after engine shut off it was gone on the next start. I
never used it anyway :)

I did not disconnect the battery either during the installation of my K & N setup, but lost my skip shift light too. Perhaps vaccum plays a part in this?

ViperD, do you mean to say that the sensor has gone bad or that it is located incorrectly in the K&N intake? If the sensor was bad wouldnt you have a check engine light?
I dont have a 03/04 service manual , but according to a Gen2 manual I have, the air temperature sensor is one of the inputs the PCM monitors to determine the required injector pulse.
The skip shift functions when
1) The engine coolant is above 106F
2) The vehicle speed is greater than 12 mph, but less than 20 mph.
3) Engine speed is less than 1322 rpm, you are in 1st gear and you are at 1/4 throttle or less.
I dont see the corelation between the air temperature sensor and the skip shift.

I did notice however that the air temp. sensor is app. 1.375 inches from the throttle body on the stock air intake setup and 2.75 on the K&N setup.

I have the day off tomorrow so maybe I will put the stock setup back on and see if the skip shift comes back.

Interesting i got my filters from jonB but they were shipped by Archer Racing. Summit sells them for 307.00 and shipping is 7.95 I believe we should our suppliers as long as they are competitive. took 15 minutes to install most of the time spent opening battery box and closing it. i can't see any reason to take ground off the temp sensor is not live with key off.

I put the stock air filter system back on and I have the skip shift back.
I reinstalled the K&N system and skip shift is gone again.
ViperD, I rotated the air temp. sensor to (4) different radial positions and it didnt make any difference.
I think the distance that the sensor is from the front of the throttle body is the culprit. There is a 1.375 difference between the stock setup and the K&N.
Now I am just wondering if running the K&N setup is sending incorrect air temp readings to the PCM and what are the consequences of this?
