Not to try to steer any business away from Chuck, but another option is the set by McGard. While you're at it you can replace the cheesy stock lug nuts with theirs, which are of considerably better quality. The prices and part numbers are from Summit Racing

McGard Lug Nuts 10.39/set of 4
(p/n MCG-64010)

McGard Wheel Locks 19.95/set of 4
(p/n MCG-24193)

If the stock lug nuts work with the HRE's, the McGards should work. However, the McGards are offered in several different styles, due to different seats (flat or conical).

OK, Summit racing recommended the MCG-24193, and the McGard site recommends the MCG-24138. I called their tech guys, and found out that they both are cone seat, 3/4" Hex. The difference... the 24193 is about 1 1/4" long, and the 24138 is 1 1/2". Can anyone near their stock lug nuts measure to see which is the more correct size? McGard is voting for the longer (24138) one. I'm awaiting your responses!

I am using the 24193 on my 2001 stock wheels without a problem. I can't speak for ACR or HRE wheels. Since the seat is the same, I can't see where an extra 1/4 inch longer is going to make a major difference, except, of course, that the lock nut will stick out a little further.

I bought the Gorilla brand locks, offered from Summit as well. I like the design better than McGard. Also went with 13/16" lug nuts instead of 3/4". The key that comes with the Gorilla locks is 13/16" and comes with an adapter to fit your 3/4" lug wrench. I figured that larger diameter lug nuts couldn't hurt and there is plenty of clearance between the lug nut and the wheel.

Ron,

I definitely don't want the locks sticking out. I just wanted to make sure that the 24193 (shorter lock) didn't "bottom out." I'm assuming that your locks go all the way down to hold the wheel, no problem?

FYI - The lug locks from GORILLA which fit our cars is the 71681N Acorn style, 1/2" lug locks. They only come in 1.4" lengths. Anyone know the exact length of the stock nuts?

Re: Lock Lugnuts for Standard \'01 Wheels?

Follow-Up

I decided to go with the Gorilla lugs and matching wheel locks. I didn't like the look of McGard's locks... doesn't match the rest of the lugs.

Also, the local Discount Tire was a retailer. The Gorilla acorn lugs were part #41188HT. These are the 3/4" Hex Head 1/2" Bulge Acorn nuts. They are only SLIGHTLY longer than stock nuts (about 1/8", but are still recessed [ie, they don't stick out past wheel]). The stock nuts were a joke... comprised of a 17mm nut covered by a 19mm shell.

The matching locks were roughly the same size, and are part #71481N.

I was able to get the whole set for $45 + tax, and they installed them for free (torque wrench, of course). A worthwhile investment to prevent our wheels from falling off, in my opinion :)
