I think a lot of people keep 'em.....if you're on a trip its way easier to carry the limp-along than to tote an extra full-sized wheel. I've eliminated mine (in favor of a big sub) but keep it around in case I go 100's of miles away from all my tires!

I had heard that the spare tire on the gen 1 is part of the rear crumple zone

Not on GTSs. The dabate was waged several times over the past few years, I looked for the definitive posts from the experts but couldn't find it. You may be able to find it....the best info exchanges were a couple of years ago.

I think there may be a difference between the GTSs and RT/10s with regard to the spare as part of the structure.
