Looking for Advice/Tranny Problems

My 6 speed transmission is giving me some problems. I can not shift from 6th back to 5th. Plus I have trouble sometimes going into reverse.
I discovered a couple of weeks back that my rear gears are 3.73 (bought the car used, first Viper-thought they all felt that way). The rear end is loud and I am taking it in for new gears. Going to back it off to 3.55. I have talked to a couple of people and both have said that the 3.73 can cause problems.
So after the rear end is fixed. Next month maybe the transmission. What are the concerns when rebuilding the tranny?
How about upgrades? The more I know going in, the better off I will be. Thanks in advance!

I had the exact problem. Tranny would shift fine into any gear except from 6th to 5th. Dodge put a new one under warrenty. I think I would have just lived with it if I didn't have the warrenty.
