Friend of mine has an 03 with 30k on it. Never had any problems till Monday. He was driving and started hearing a loud clanking noise from the pass side of the motor. He is getting no check engine light, no smoke and no heavy shaking. When he told me i thought maybe a rod. We are not sure what it is. It gets louder as you rev it up. Its not the normal ticking you hear but a louder clanking that sounds like its coming out from under the valve cover. We are going to pull it off Sunday and see what we find.

What should we look for? Ill try to get a video and post it up.

Any ideas of what could be the problem?

Here is a list of possibles: (GENERALIZED)

Failed rocker / bent push-rod / collapsed lifter / bent valve

Cracked piston

Rod bearing failure

Wrist pin failure

Cutting the oil filter open and inspecting it will help determine whether or not you have any metal from a bad bearing.

A compression and a leak-down test will help determine whether or not you have a broken piston or bent valve.

A visual inspection of whats underneath the valve cover should help with the rest of the valve train.
