lumpy cam...

I have a 99 GTS that I bought used. Everyone thinks that I have motor work done, but as far as I know, its all stock, except for the exhaust and no cats. Does everybody else around the year 99 have a very lumpy cam and sounds like a V8(*********** sound, and not a rice burner sound). I love the way i sounds and thought thats the way most of they sound. I have heard some Vipers,and honestly, some sound great and others sound like a 4cylinder, whats the deal??

I have a 99 RT and I get the same thing people asking me if I got some major notor work done and I tell then "not yet".

Yeah all non creampuff gen 2's (1996 - 1999 GTS and 1997 - 1999 RT/10) have a really lumpy cam, its normal.


by the way its also been proven many times that they react alot better to most mods then other years as well.

Has anyone ever dropped in a stock cam from a '96 to '99 into a '00 through '02? I've been thinking about a cam swap and was wondering...

I decided if I was going to change the cam in my stock motor I would just get one from Crower or ane of the other manufacturers. You could get a custom grind for any work you have done to your car and will get more performance than a stock cam. Another thing the stock PCM may limmit your power gains on an aftermarket cam. I have already changed my PCM to the Mopar unit.

Would the factory PCM work well with a factory cam from 96 to 99 though? Also, do you know what the specs are on that stock cam versus the specs on the '00 to '02?

I have a 97 GTS, only borlas and straight pipes.

In case anyone is wondering what this cam sounds like - if you have ever heard a high performance boat in the water, to me it sounds like that. I am told all the time how awesome it sounds, and it does - esp at idle. VERY noticeable. :2tu:

We have a club member that put the lumpy cam into his 2000 when he did his head work. Seems to like the results!

but how would that mopar work with a vec 2?

CSTER: I have a 2001 that is running a 96 cam and PCM. I upgraded those items when the Ross forged pistons were installed. It is a good upgrade with no problems, the cam sounds and runs better and the PCM is less sensitive to some of the anoying little CE lights. I think you will find alot of the newer cars running the older PCM.
You will not be dissapointed.

Great info guys. I think that's a really great mod. Have any of you dyno'd your car for before and after numbers? How about seat of the pants? Can you feel a difference?

Is there an aftermarket grind that people have found works well even with stock heads? I know when I had my Z-06 the hot ticket was to put in a hotter cam, leaving the heads stock, and with a little dyno tuning, picking up 40 to 50 horses. Any chance of similar results with stock Gen II heads on my 2002?

Sean Roe told me the earlier cam is worth about 15 more HP.

VIPR GTS has one in his Viper and it sounds gawd-awful mean. :2tu:

I was told that in addition to the cam change for 2000, the lifters were also changed to a type that would reduce the lumpy idle.

should you also change the lifters?

I'm thinking there's at least another 30 horses to be found with a custom cam, leaving the rest of the motor stock. With a set of 1.7 roller rockers, probably another 15 to 20 horsepower????

Would I need a dyno tune or would a VEC I work for that? I know with the C5, the computer needed to be reworked with a dyno tune session. Is the Viper computer as sophisticated as that or will changing the air/fuel with the VEC I work?

On the cams with less overlap wouldn't you have more cylinder pressure and a bit more torque?
