I am the VERY proud new owner of a 1996 Viper RT-10. It has 9,800 miles and appears to be mechanically sound. I am having one small problem. When I decelerate to a stop, like approaching a traffic light, the motor dies. I then restart it and it runs great, until I stop again. It happens about 6 out of 10 stops. The motor can either be cold or hot. It seems to make no difference.

Any suggestions?

Disconnect the computer(PCM) for about 10 minutes. This will reset the computer, I have had this happen to me and reseting the computer fixed the problem. I think it has to do with how it controls the A/F mixture during the decel.

Bummer.

I had a big block 440 with Predator carb that did that - it was a surge problem.

If nothing else works - do what Basil Fawlty did on Fawlty Towers when his car kept being bad - beat it with a stick... preferrably a leafy thin one

It won't fix the problem - but you'll feel better...

at least until you find a scratch...

Hope that helped

ok - I'm sorry - leaving now :(

Photo_Pro, I had the same thing happen couple years ago with my sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet 96 RT/10, and the battery was the culprit... At the time, my battery was ~ 5 years old, so I just bought a new one because it seemed like good maintenance. It solved the problem...

I would also recommend doing the throttle cable sync procedure. Both are simple procedures, which will allow you to get to know yours snake a little better...

By the way, CONGRATS on the new snake, and given that you are a Photo Pro, you need to know that you must post pics of your ride... :2tu:

TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE THROTTLE BODIES, YOU MAY FIND AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF CARBON BUILT UP ON THE BUTTERFILES AND CHAMBERS, THIS CAN CAUSE A RESTRICTION OF AIR INTAKE THAT THE AIS MOTOR CANNOT COMPENSATE FOR QUICKLY ENOUGH ON DECEL, BUT ONCE YOU CYCLE THE KEY IT RESETS ITSELF TO ALLOW A RESTART. OF YOU FIND A LOT OF CARBON, TAKE AN OLD TOOTHBRUSH, OR IF YOU DON'T LIKE YOUR WIFE USE HERS, SPRAY CARCLEANER INTO THE BORES AND BRUSH OUT CARBON ON CHAMBERS AND THE BUTTERFLIES. WARNING!!! THE RETURN SPRINGS ARE PRETTY STRONG AND CAN CLOSE THE BLADES AWFULLY QUICK ON FINGERS, KNOWN FROM EXPERIENCE. EITHER HAVE SOMEONE IN THE CAR KEEP THEIR FOOT ON THE PEDAL OR YOU CAN USE NEEDLE NOSE VICE GRIPS ON THE LINKAGE. FOR HEAVANS SAKE DO ALL OF THIS WITH THE ENGINE NOT RUNNING. YOU WOULD BE SHOCKED AT HOW MUCH CARBON BUILDS UP EVEN IF YOU KEEP THE AIR FILTERS CLEAN AND HOW MUCH OF AN EFFECT A LITTLE TOOTHBRUSHING CAN HAVE.

If you're going to do that type of cleaning, which I totally agree with, I would use a throttle body and O2 sensor safe cleaner.

Had the same problem with my 94, and thanks to some people on this forum they gave me the answer.Sounds like a carbon buildup in the throttle bodies and Air idel motor. Get some injector cleaner and clean throttle bodies. Remove the Air Idel motor, be careful not to lose the O ring inside or damage the gasket that it attaches to the block. Clean carbon out of it with cleaner and replace. This is a cheap fix, if this don't do it you will only be out a couple of bucks for cleaner.

replacing the battery may solve the problem in the short term even if the t-bodies are full of carbon but this is only because it will reset the ais motor on the first start up to zero which gives it a false start point, it will still reach a point wher it can no longer compensate and start stalling again. speed sensor is a possibility but usually it will cause a problem on accel as well. we had a 95 rt/10 with a bad speed sensor and signal wire that would only act up on hard accel when fully warmed up. if it is a speed sensor it should also trip a check engine lite/note i said should.
