If anyone is selling MGW parts please PM me. As a new owner of a 97 GTS it's time for the mods... Looking at chrome smooth tubes as well. Anyone with them have heat soak issues?

Thanks in advance...

I think I have a set of chrome smoothies I can sell you if you want them. Don't have a clue about the heat soak issue.

I have another vehicle that has an IAT sensor to monitor air temperature in the intake tube. I have measured air temps with a scanner using the stock rubber air tube and a chrome intake tube. I don't know how accurate the reading is, but with the rubber tube the air was at 85 Deg F when driving. With the chrome metal tube, it was at 110 Deg F, if I recall correctly. Difference in performance? I don't know.

Interesting? Everything counts? Out of curiosity was the engine already warm when you threw on the Chrome pipes?

REDGTS - PM with your price? Clear of scratches? What color rubber connectors?

I have run both and the Chrome tubes get warmer to the touch. I find it hard to believe that air passing though them at the rate of speed it would be moving would have much of a chance to pick up much heat though. Guess I should get off my butt and thermocouple mine up and scope it out. If it is actually increasing 20 degrees, that would pretty significant.

Ken,

That would be great. Let me know what you find out. I was all set on the chrome, but have my doubts now. Like you said 20 degrees is significant.

I was told by a "very reliable source" that the chrome tubes basically are a waste of money. They don't do anything for HP gains(as advertised) and the motor will **** in hot engine air instead of the cooler air with the stock box. I am not a mechanic so I go by what my "source" says. I was planning on having my car dyno'd using both but never got around to it. Needless to say, I took off my tubes and put the stock box back on.

Sounds like you're talking about chrome tubes with open cone filters. We're talking about using chrome tubes with the stock box.

It makes sense that the metal tubes would transfer heat faster.
Hard to believe that the air going through such a short tube could pick up much heat. Of course, things are not always intuitive.

I wonder if the measurement would have to be done on a car. How about a shop vac? Just measure the air downstream from the device under test. The ambient air temp shouldn't change much during the test.
This would give a clue as to hear transfer, right?

It would be really funny if someone could prove that the metal tubes did cause higher intake air temperature.

I mean, all those guys who could feel the extra hp from their chrome tubes....

C'mon, there is no way the 12 inches of metal on the chrome tubes heats up air 30 degrees more as it's passing through when driving. I don't buy that. I'd have to have both types on, drill a hole in each before TB and measure temp while driving to believe that.

You are right RedGts, my mistake. I thought you were talking about the setup I used to have. So I have no comment on the setup you are talking about, but I stand behind what with what I posted. :D

er uh......... isn't that how a heat exchanger on a furnace works? Heat the metal up and force air through it?

They LOOK purrrrrrrrty though!
