On my 94 RT10 with my new factory transmission that was just changed out on the last of my extended warranty I had also changed out my shifter to the WoodHouse modified version, with a 3” bolt and the MGW shifter knob.

It looks ridiculously short, feels good with normal shifting and definitely faster than the stock shifter. For the 1st time in my life I hit 1st gear when going from 2nd to 3rd. Trust me, it won’t go into 1st when speed shifting but it will make a pile of noise where it will scare the shxx out of you and then your mad for doing something so stupid. It does not seem to have done any immediate serious damage except there appears to be a little more noise or a light wine from the tranny during deceleration.

I have driven standard transmissions all my life and have missed a few shifts like every one else but I have never hit the wrong gear like this. Is this a phenomenon with the new shifter, the shorter shifter or a combination of both? I never had this problem with the stock set up and I’m seriously considering going back to it. Rest assured I don’t want to even attempt speed shifting until I thoroughly understand exactly what and why this happened.

Does anyone have any ideas, experiences or suggestions?

The whining sound is probably just paranoia.

Don't worry man. Life goes on. I did 3 to 2 the other week, first missed shift. Wheels barked but I dropped clutch down before they overrevved the motor I believe. Clutch feels fine still, so nothing happens to that overspinning.

You may want to check the fluid in it. My 94 made the whinning noise until I put in a different oil. I think it was a syntorque you get from the dealership.

Tim - been there done that. I just posted this same message to another owner who did it.

I was redlined in first, went to redline in second, and went back to first. Tires barked, car hopped a little. I was beside myself. I kept thinking the car was not as responsive as it was before. I told my dealer, he kinda laughed and said it's all in your mind.

I ended up taking the car in and having the valve covers taken off and we ran the valves, looked everything over, etc.... Thought everything was fine, but the noise did not go away. They looked into it and found my rearend got messed up. First the spring over the shock became unseated and it was rubbing real bad, and I also tourqued the rearend bad enough to shift or move some kind of crush collar, or shim thing...? It ended up that my rearend needed to be pulled apart and rebuilt. $2,000.00 driver error. My additional HP and Trq, may have helped me tear mine up, who knows.

Have it looked at!
