mods to cool the gen 5 interior

hi, just trying to see what other gen5 owners have done to try to cool the car down w/r/t ext. and inside heat shielding….

i'm gonna put in the corsa but thinking of removing the 2nd set of cats and also wrap the ext. pipe with some insulating material…. i know some don't recommend doing this cause it becomes a caustic with road debris and water and supposedly rot the pipe but… it doesn't rain in so.calif and i doubt i ll drive it much in rain so…

and i'm still thinking of adding some additional heat shielding insulation material in to the foot well and ext. side/door area to further keep the car cooler…. dynamat or something….

has any one here done anything like it and what was the result ?

I know that Dan Cragin (LA) uses inconel metal insulation to reduce interior heat. It is not cheap, but really effective.

I haven't noticed any heat in my TA, for sure a lot less than my ACR.

well..i did talk to dan and he said he recently did a customer's gen5 but didn't tell me much on what material he used… customer was more concerned with noise then heat level….i want noise, just reduce heat a beat….
that mt guy on youtube said the new gen5 had some 30deg diff. in temp in foot well vs the head level.. vs. 50 deg difference with previous gen…. that's why i was thinking about further heat shielding in the cabin further…as the carpet does get warm….esp. on exhaust side…..
then i was wondering… what is the temp. difference of 'other cars'…. 15 to 20 deg?
i'm putting on the corsa and taking the distal cat. converters off so, i suppose it'd help but...

First thing to know is to disregard anything MT has reported on the Gen V. Trust yourself as far as any possible heat issue in your car. I track mine aggressively, that gets everything about as hot as you're apt to, and there's no issue at all when I turn the A/C on. The side sill carpet does get hot at the track, but I don't notice the heat in the footwell unless I rest my foot against the carpet, but that doesn't bother me at the track. The TA has the least insulation of any, btw. Removing the cats will automatically reduce heat.

Get a couple of thermometers for an accurate temp. difference.

1. The Bellanger headers come with the front cat deleted.

2. A piece of DEI radiant insulation in the footwell, from the floor, the width of the footwell and about 12" high, will help quite a bit. It sits under the vertical part of the carpet.

It was my TA that Dan put in Dynamats to quiet down the noise for freeway driving as I want to do more street driving in the car than in my old ACR. There's good noise and bad noise, what the car gives out between 2000-2700 RPM is not good noise. I welcome as much exhaust noise as possible above 3500 RPM as speed below that to me is cruising speed and any noise I hear at cruising speed is BAD noise. Had a 900 HP Ford GT with straight pipes and the car was very loud at large throttle openings but had hardly any noise or drone at cruise. I haven't been able to find an exhaust combination on the Viper that can get close to that level of refinement and loudness since my '08 ACR in six years, probably never will.

As to cabin temperature difference, I guess if one measure the temps right next to the exhaust pipes and the headliner, the difference would be very big, but I don't drive with bear feet and never noticed any heat at all, and the A/C works quite well. When there's an aftermarket ECU available, I'll most likely do the headers and hi-flow cats, but just for more power, and not for lowering cabin temps (lower under-hood temps is also welcome though).

hey thanks for all the info/replies... yeah, agree, when i have the a/c going, it's quite cool in there and unless i touch the door sill/exh. side carpet, the heat is not really an issue... .
i did think about getting one of those infrared temp sensors and read the different part... to see what the difference is ...maybe i'll pick one up at harbor freight tools for fun of it...

as to the dynamat that Dan did...i was hoping to hear from you..tnx for your input... yes, i did notice a descent amount of exhaust noise on 'cruise' rpm around 2500.... although it's not a drone...is there some drone near 2900 to 3200 range ? I agree, it would be nice to have a bit less exh. noise on cruise vs. when throttling... i'm putting in the corsa with distal cat. delete when my first oil change comes up.... (1000 miles ?) so the drone may go away but i will still have some noise at cruise huh... ? oh well... did the dynamat help for your need ? was it the alum. type so the heat is improved some as well ?

by the way, one of my mcycle riding buddy had his exh. wrapped with something called "lava wrap"... kept his pipe heat down noticably... is there room to wrap the pipe from cat delete and over the corsa ? i read someone saying that debris and water will get in corrode your exh. system but....i'm in so.calif...i won't be driving much in rain, ...even if i wanted to so, that's not an issue to me.... any comment re: this wrap ?

Put the A/C vents on bi-level, so they blow on your feet and through the dash vents at the same time. I can freeze myself out in my G5 that way, even on 95F days here in Houston.
