You guys are all trying to be too sophisticated. The first time I realized my floor jack would not fit under the jacking point, I just stacked about 5 newspapers behind the front left wheel. I backed up until I was on top of the papers, and then jacked up the car and put a jack stand under the frame on the left side. Then you go over to the other side, and it is now high enough to get the jack under and then put the jack stand under the right side. This all takes seconds to do and costs nothing assuming you buy a daily paper. Sometimes the obvious answer is right under our noses. Dennis Kimball

I still think my idea of jacking the rear slightly to get the jack under the front is the easiest of all. And you don't have to signup for the paper...No positioning ramps/papers and driving...Just jack and go...

Actually, here in Silicon Valley, we are stuck with the most liberal rag, the "San Jose Mercury News", also known as the "San Jose Jerky News". It gives me great pleasure to figure out other uses to justify that I spend 35 cents every weekday on this worthless rag. You can use it to start fires in the fireplace, or wrap fish or jack up your Viper ...etc. To answer your question, since I do not buy a weekend paper, I use about 5-6 weekday papers. Try a screen refresh. They are OK, but they didn't load the first time for me either.

Steve,
I like your ramps. Real close to what I do. I have 2x12s, but I just drive my front wheels up onto the 2x12s laid flat. Then I can get my cheapo floor jack underneath the car, and the whole side comes up. Much easier to get to the brake pads than your method.

Dennis,
I remember the Murky News- always an interesting read. Best high-tech help wanted section in the country. Not good for much else. Never once saw any notice of a poisoned well near those semi fabs... Very slanted viewpoint, IMHO.

This is to Dennis. Have you ever been stuck on a problem with your computer. You've been working on it for an hour and some guy comes up behind you and says "Oh, just hit ctrl-E" and the problem is solved.

The newspaper technique is just too simple.

Argh!

My ramps are not quite home made, but they work pretty good.

Beat ya by 13 minutes Norm. It pays to have an 18 month old get you up early sometimes!

nice. If it's cheap and it works and safe..I like it. Did someone see how Nadine did hers? She had old bricks...looked dangerous. I will have to buy her some ramps for Christmas!
