So, if the cams are such a "problem" on MY2000+
cars, why not just replace them? It seems there
are some very reasonably priced aftermarket ones
out there.

Our Vipers have only one Cam.
As such, it is not really a problem at all. If you want to make the car sound more aggressive at idle, or if you want a bit more power, then change the cam. But I would not suggest changing the cam unless you do several other mods as well.

Good Luck!

Also, the cam only relates to one of the "problems" with '00+ cars and headers. The other problem is the O2 issue caused by the computer, and a new cam isn't going to affect that.

Actually, this was a musing post to all the folks (myself included) who have MY2000+ Vipers with the customary other mods including computers. My musing was about why we seem to spend so much money on everything else and then complain, but there is very little (almost no) talk about upgrading the cam. (Had "cams" on the brain from searching for after market ones)

Take a good look at all the dyno numbers you will see the 2000+ creampuffs are right there with most 96+ vipers. In some cases bone stock they produce more rwhp. i have personally seen 422rwhp bone stock. Cams make very little difference, it's total combinations that count. Personally i think there is a lot of garbage about 2000+ vipers and its' generally by those that don't own them. I love mine it's tight , fast and fun it just perfoms what more could i ask for.

It was once posted that the "station wagon cam" which yields equal or better power partially accomplished this by using higher leak down rate lifters. Maybe it was just someone guessing but has anyone tried just swapping lifters? Sounds like it could work both ways. Add lope to the creampuffs and stop NGR from the early models. Unless, of course, the lifter thing is BS.

I gotta side with Ron on this one. I love my Steel Gray 2000. I have a PCM that doesn't throw the O2 codes. I don't think it works quite as the stock PCM, but I'm not resetting the code every couple of days. I still have the stock when for the track. Besides, I don't think I'm good enough a driver to notice the kind of power differences we're talking about anyway.

Steve,
I am told by those 'in the know' that the lifter thing is quite real, and there are gains to be had by swapping lifters. However, since you have to remove the heads to swap lifters, you might as well put on ported heads while you're in there

Certainly the combination of heads, lifters, rockers, and bolt-ons worked just fine (515 RWHP / 525 RWTQ) in combination with the stock cam on my '01.
