Oh, and there are louvers (argh!)

I've done this old school w/masking tape and the autobody paper rolls with mask applied to edges and it takes hours to do.

I was thinking of other products such as shelf lining vinyl w/adhesive back. This might be OK for large areas but would need special attention around the edges.

Another might be some kind of stretchy plastic wrap that has some adhesive backing....

..... (eureka).... there is something similar to temporarily protect carpets and hard wood floors while moving. (checking ULine....)

and the winner is:

Uline Carpet Protection Tape

2.5 mil plastic w/adhesive backing "Easy to remove. Leaves no residue."

Oh Baby!

the carpet mask your talking about is great stuff . its the same stuff they put on new cars when delivered. I use it on my car mats when I have bought new cars to keep the mats looking new.
they do sell it at Lowe's and Home depot. its in the carpet area.
