Not to be too negative on the giving for the WTC but out of the $300+ million the red cross has collected, they have spent less than $50 million for the victims so far. Its been 2 months, WHEN are they going to give the families the rest? In 2 or 3 years!! I say give ALL of it to them TODAY!!!!!!!!

All of this according to the FOX news network on November 7, 2001
>>But as of today, the September 11 Fund has collected $250 million. Just $35 million of that has been given out, but not directly to the families. That money was given to other charities. Many of the grieving families, most of the ones that we've spoken with, have heard nothing from the September 11 Fund. the Red Cross is only giving the families 20 percent of the money it has received after 9/11. The other 80 percent's going for other things. And The Wall Street Journal is reporting that not one cent has been given out by Mayor Giuliani's Twin Towers Fund, which raised more than $100 million for the families of the firefighters and police officers killed.

I believe Guiliani just had a press conference yesterday announcing that each of the victim's family will be receiving a check for $100,000 to start the distribution. I believe the intention would be to then do a more thorough analysis of each families needs before the next distribution.

Interesting discussion indeed. I am a little disappointed in the charities and how the money has been disbursed thus far. Hopefully they will "catch up" soon.

In 1993 I lived in Hartsburg, MO. It was one of the hardest hit towns in the United States during the record floods of that year. Numerous homes were simply washed away, while others would see waters rise to the roofs. One of the houses we helped to clean out had mud on the ceiling fans - and it was one of the more fortunate homes.

As the waters rose and the disaster was imminent, there was only ONE charity that stepped up to the plate: The Salvation Army. They set up a makeshift store/cafeteria in the fire station. They brought food, clothing, cleaning supplies, and more volunteers than even lived in this little town. Several people were so moved by the dedication of the Salvation Army that they started donating to them on the spot - and every donation stayed in Hartsburg. My wife and I bought out most of the cleaning supplies we could find and donated them, I got my employer (Sprint) to donate free phone service and long distance service for the shelter, and even met one of the Sprint execs halfway from Kansas City when Sprint/North Supply donated 50,000 heavy-duty tie wraps for sandbags. The Salvation Army stayed after the waters had subsided and continued to help with clean up and feeding the volunteers. They provided shelter and helped pay for other shelter for those that needed it (we housed the fire chief and his family for three months).

I have made donations to American Red Cross, United Way, and Salvation Army, in addition to local charities such as the battered women's shelters. No national charity has impressed me as much as the Salvation Army. The CEO makes less than $90,000 a year (from what I could find, American Red Cross local chapter presidents make as much as $275,000 each). I firmly believe that any charitable donation is better than none at all, however I also like to see it put to good use. That's my 2 cents.

Oh, and as this is not necessarily Viper related, to Off Topic it goes.

Chris
