I just picked up an 04 Mamba SRT-10 and I would like to service the eng/trans/rear/fuel system.

Any tricks, pains, and or services that I should know about before I get it up and get dirty?

Also do they sell oil and fuel filters at Auto Zone or is it OEM only.

Thanks

Aaron

Congrats, Aaron...NICE RIDE.

I'm conservative....sooooooo...in my opinion, go slowly:

1. Check car's old service records to see what has/has not been done.

2. Be sure to get/use Owner's Manual and Service manual.

3. Go with ALL OEM fluids at first...noting that PS fluid in the Service Manual has some mis-info.

4. Check crank damper bolt ASAP...here's why:

5. Keep in touch here !!!!

Thanks

Do people often do the eng/trans/rear at home?

I have always done my C5 at home.

I do ALL the maintenance myself. And now that the warranty period is up, I'll be doing it without free parts. LOL

Good advice in the above posts.
- You'll want the Viper Oil filter (P/N 5037836AA). It's a few bucks more, but worth it.
- Score the oil at WalMart in the gallon jugs. Auto parts stores for the other fluids.
- Also run a VIN number check at (a respected) dealer and get the FULL history of the car.

TIP: Get a bigger oil catch pan/tray. 10 quarts minimum.

My Routine:
- Engine = as close to every 3,000 as possible w/o stopping by the side of the road to do it. :)
- Transmission = every 5,000 (I'm pretty ******* trannys).
- Rear End = every 15,000 (earlier if you can).

I have to order a book but does anyone have a link to a Capacities chart and type or brand of oil/tran/rear/brake fluid you use.

Thanks

I maintain our Vipers using all OEM fluids. As you get to know your Viper...AND, decide just how you want to enjoy it, you may well choose to dabble in fluid alternatives...especially if you plan to track the car.

I'll dig up a list of the OEM fluids for you later today...noting that if you are in a hurry, look for Viper Wizards posts on same as he gives parts numbers.

By the way, that is ONE COOL VIPER !!!

For "stock" OEM "factory fill" fluids start here:

Motor oil...Mobil 1 0W-40 (started as factory fill in 2005 by my memory, but many use it in ALL Gen III Vipers, noting that 2003 and I THINK 2004's came with Mobil 1 10W-30).

MOPAR Oil Filter (Viper Specific up to and including 2006) 05037836AA.

MOPAR "Power Steering Fluid + 4" 05166226 AA when in the pint size (also called "ATF+4" in the quart size). NOTE: This was not the factory fill nor the TSB recall fill on 2003 Vipers...it first appeared in the 2004 Vipers but most Techs to whom I have spoken now recommend the newer "+4" fluid for all Gen III's.

MOPAR "Antifreeze/Coolant 5Year/ 100,000 mile" 05066386AA.

MOPAR "Brake & Clutch Fluid DOT 4" 04549625AC.

MOPAR "Synthetic Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-140" 04874469.

MOPAR "Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant SAE 75W-85" ( also known as "Castrol Syntorq LT 75W/85").

Please note that I took this info from the actual containers of said fluids...the oldest of which was purchased in April 2007...BUT, sometimes labels and/or part numbers get changed over time.

I HOPE this helps...feel free to disagree or modify to fit YOUR needs...call me anytime if you have a question.

Can't help you on Gen III fuel filter as I have yet to do it on our 2003. That said, be sure to de-pressurize the system before you try to change the filter!! Also, be sure that the quick disconnect REALLY snaps back into place upon reconnecting!!!!!! FYI...Gen III fuel filters are quite expensive by comparison to prior years.

Here is some info posted by Viper Wizard in 2005:

"GENI & GENII fuel filter #4708317 MSRP $37.50
GENIII [SRT's] fuel filter #52290801AB MSRP $120.00

Who in DC parts dept. came up with that price? "What are you, trying to retire early?"

The ONLY differences between the two filters are: GENI&II have the in & out lines at each end. The GENIII filter has both lines at one end.

I guess I'll be looking for an aftermarket filter! "

This info led off this short thread:

http://forums.viperclub.org/srt10-s...763-anybody-get-fuel-filter-your-srt-yet.html

Has NO ONE changed a Gen III fuel filter yet ???

I ordered one on line for $89 and looking at the filter on the car it seems to be not a bad swap.

I found it funny that our Dodge dealer has never even ordered one for any 03-06 viper and they seem to be an OEM only part.

Proactive maintenance is always better than reactive maintenance.
